Hi everyone,
As a former law enforcement officer this kind of fraud really makes me cringe because it could have been easily avoided! Recently we learned about a woman who was victimized by a fraudster because she didn’t realize that there is no relationship between Craigslist and eBay postings, and did not follow eBay’s general buying safety tips: mainly, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is! These types of scams are getting more common, so please beware. Here is a step-by-step account of what happened: (More …)

Microsoft IE Security Update
Hi Everyone,
It has become increasingly important to protect your computer against exploits and viruses by regularly updating your browser and operating system.Yesterday, Microsoft released the latest critical patch for a recently detected vulnerability, that allows unsafe web pages to insert malware onto your computer. This can wreak havoc by stealing user names, passwords and other critical information, and at the same time impact your browsing in negative and damaging ways.
I strongly recommend, as a security expert, to avoid such problems by keeping your computer up-to-date with the latest patches—just as you would maintain your car for road safety. Microsoft offers an automatic update feature for Windows operating systems that you should enable. You can also check your system to ensure that you have the latest patches by going to the Microsoft Security and Update page.
I also recommend:
• Get a recent version of anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware software
• Never run or download software that you don’t trust or click on links or attachments from people you don’t know
• Be extremely wary of holiday offers or any that sound too good to be trueThese precautions will help you to have a much safer online experience. For more information, tools and tutorials please visit the eBay Security Center and Announcement Board.
Wishing you a safe and pleasant holiday!

eBay Bans Deadly Products from Site; Works Closely With Consumer Product Safety Commission
It’s no secret that I’ve made online trust & safety a key topic of discussion here on Ink recently going so far as to enlist the contributions of eBay’s Online Safety Advisor, Rich LaMagna, to weigh in from time to time on policies and best practices. With that in mind, when I learned that we assisted in enforcing the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) recall of Simplicity bassinets and Magnetix toys, I wanted to learn more.
I was fortunate enough to spend a few minutes with Scott Wolfson of the CPSC to find out more about the recent recalls and how online consumers can keep up to speed on product recalls and consumer safety. (More …)

Rich LaMagna on ABC to discuss online consumer protection
My first regular contributor to eBay Ink, Online Safety Advisor, Rich LaMagna, appeared on SF Bay Area ABC 7′s “On Your Side” yesterday talking about online consumer protection. The short segment ran last night and focused on the new increased PayPal protection and eBay’s increased commitment to making the site safe.
View the segment and read the subsequent article here.

eBay “Lays Down the Law” at 4th Annual Training Event

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to give you a quick look into a very interesting event that I attended this past Tuesday, November 18: eBay’s fourth annual, one-day training event for law enforcement officials. Over 100 federal, state and local U.S. law enforcement officers from the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, U.S Postal Service, the U.S. Secret Service and others were on hand to learn how eBay can help assist them in their investigations with both tools and resources.

Introducing Rich LaMagna – eBay Online Safety Advisor

I wanted to take a moment on Ink to introduce you to another member of the eBay team. Rich LaMagna is eBay’s Online Safety Advisor and I managed to spend a few minutes with him earlier this week to talk about what he hopes to accomplish here.Rich has an interesting role for the company in that he is essentially for “Trust & Safety” what Constance White is for fashion; Karen Bard is for pop culture; Cat Schwartz is for tech/gadgets; and what Shawn Henderson is for home design (to read more from our Style Squad team, be sure to check out http://ebayinsiderblog.com).
