A full recap of eBay Inc. at NRF 2012

Apologies for the delay here. I realize I’ve been back in the Bay Area for 24 hours but had to focus on eBay Q4 2011 earnings yesterday, meaning that my NRF 2012 recap post got put on hold. Without further ado, here you go folks…

    NRF 2012 Social Shopping Panel

    Monday’s Panel:
Social Shopping: Mobility, Social Media and Personalized Services
Moderator: Kevin Permenter, The Aberdeen Group
    Panelists:
    Liam O’Keefe, Black Bear Saloon
    Rick Orr, TabbedOut
    Bob Schwartz, Magento

Overview: Connected devices make what was once a solitary trip to the store a more socially connected event. Smartphones don’t serve as just another marketing vehicle—they can be a platform to combine the digital and physical worlds. As shoppers go through the process of discovering new products, testing them and reflecting on their purchases, they share these thoughts with their social networks and influence perception among their peer group. This session will examine why retailers must embrace and facilitate this sharing of information, and how retail outlets need to evolve to create experiences that drive sales in-store. Retailers will learn how to integrate mobile and social media strategies into a cohesive business model that enhances marketing and merchandising.

It was an engaging discussion with some key trends running through the presentations. It was something we heard from eBay Inc. CEO, John Donahoe last week and from Don Kingsborough on Sunday: The rules of technology are being rewritten and the rate of change is incredible – particularly in the world of retail and commerce. Again, the emphasis was made on the need for the education of – and adoption by – merchants. It was also agreed that when it comes to all the huge amounts of data coming in through social channels, the key is prioritization and delegation.

    PayPal Shopping Showcase

PayPal Shopping Showcase Behind the Scenes (5)

On my last day in New York I was lucky enough to check out the PayPal Shopping Showcase (and unlucky enough to get into a physical altercation with a NYC taxi cab on my walk over… but that’s another story).

    From the PayPal Blog:
Imagine a digital wallet that stores all of your gift cards, loyalty points and offers and then automatically applies the stored money and savings for you at the point of sale. Imagine purchasing an oversized item from the aisle and having it shipped directly to your house in a matter of clicks. At the Shopping Showcase, we’ll be showing merchants and select members of the media a complete set of solutions that do all of this – and so much more

You can check out all my photos of the PayPal Shopping Showcase in eBay Ink at NRF flickr set.

Also, be sure to check out our recap and video of Don Kingsborough, PayPal GM of Retail and Prepaid, and his mobile payments panel.

It has been a whirlwind 10 days covering both CES and NRF but it’s good to be back at HQ and working on some cool social projects for 2012. Will keep you all posted.

    Cheers!

PayPal mobile payments pilot at 51 Home Depot stores

No wallet… No phone… No problem!

John Donahoe paying with PayPal at Home Depot

eBay Inc. CEO, John Donahoe, talked about the new PayPal mobile payment tests being run at 51 Home Depot stores starting this week during eBay’s quarterly earnings call this afternoon. He went one better too. He actually visited a store this morning to try out the technology first-hand.

eBay CEO, John Donahoe, Visits Home Depot to pay with PayPal

Leaving his wallet and his mobile phone in his car, he tried the first-hand integration this morning at a San Jose Home Depot. By entering his mobile phone number and PIN, he was able to pay for a hammer in a matter of seconds. The receipt was emailed to him.

    Home Depot Terminal with PayPal

The system works in two ways:
    1. Using an in-store terminal, shoppers can buy items by punching in a phone number and PIN linked to their PayPal account
    2. Pay using a plastic card issued by PayPal that works like a credit card

Here’s an example of a text receipt sent to a mobile phone after purchase:

    PayPal Home Depot receipt

I think I may head over to Home Depot on Friday to try this out for myself.

    Cheers!

Scott Thompson to become CEO of Yahoo!

It has been confirmed this morning that PayPal President Scott Thompson has been named the new CEO of Yahoo!. Thompson has been president of PayPal since early 2008, after serving as CTO in charge of information technology, product development and architecture.

Here’s an excerpt from a note to all PayPal employees sent by eBay Inc. CEO, John Donahoe, this morning:

As you may already have seen, Yahoo! announced this morning that Scott Thompson is joining the company as CEO, effective immediately. Scott informed me Tuesday afternoon, saying that despite his passion for PayPal, this was an opportunity he felt he had to take. I know I speak for everyone in wishing Scott the best.

I will serve in the interim role as President and will be meeting with the PayPal leadership team this morning to plan a seamless transition. And while I’m sure Scott’s decision is a shock to many of you, as it was to me, there is one thing I am certain of: PayPal has an enormous opportunity in front of it and we will not slow down. We will not miss a beat. And we will continue driving the incredible momentum that each of you has helped to create.

PayPal had an outstanding 2011 and a strong close to the fourth quarter. PayPal’s vision is clear. Our strategies are set and we have a strong, focused leadership team in place. And across PayPal, we have you — an incredibly talented team, committed to creating the future of money and changing how the world shops and pays.

Let’s do it, and take this special business to the next level in 2012 and beyond.

I join John in wishing Scott all the best.

I’ll update this blog post with any new developments as they happen.

    Cheers,
    RBH

    eBay Inc. Acquires BillSAFE

eBay Inc. has acquired BillSAFE, a leading provider of payment upon invoice in Germany. The deal follows eBay Inc.’s acquisition of a minority stake in the company in October 2010. eBay Inc. now owns 100% of the outstanding shares of BillSAFE. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

    From The PayPal Blog:
By combining BillSAFE with PayPal, which serves more than 15 million accounts in Germany, PayPal believes the addition of BILLSAFE will provide a comprehensive payment service for merchants and consumers…

BillSAFE works with merchants of all sizes in Germany, giving them a simple and secure way for payment upon invoice. Customers select their preferred item of choice, but only pay upon receiving the goods together with the invoice.

You can read all about it from Arnulf Keese, Managing Director, PayPal Germany over on The PayPal Blog.

    Cheers,

eBay’s Largest Mobile Holiday Shopping Season

Hi, this is Amanda from the eBay Communications team.

The holidays are approaching, which is a time for a lot of great seasonal activities – ski trips to Tahoe, large family dinners, making hot chocolate with grandma and of course – lots of mobile commerce & payments!

In all seriousness, the holiday season is the busiest time for eBay and PayPal mobile. The holidays can be a crazy time of year and we all want to find the best deals and pay anytime, anywhere.

We partnered with our friends at PayPal mobile to create infographics that bring this data to life. For example, three items per second are sold via eBay on mobile devices and more than $10,000 in payments are processed every minute by PayPal. Please find the infographic from eBay Mobile below:

Also, be sure to check out PayPal’s data and holiday infographic on the PayPal blog.

Enjoy and don’t forget mobile for a easier holiday season – to save more time for skiing and hot chocolate!

PayPal predicts $4.7B in Digital Goods TPV in 2011; a $1B increase from last year #innovate2011

I’m currently sitting in the X.commerce Innovate 2011 Day 2 keynote but wanted to share some PayPal news coming out of the conference this morning. To start with, PayPal has updated its Total Payment Volume (TPV) prediction for its digital goods business to $4.7B in 2011 – up $1B from last year.

    Gaming
According to a PayPal blog post back in August, 70% of gamers are PayPal customers. As a result, coming this holiday, PayPal will be offering a full, in-console payments experience on Xbox 360.

    HTML5 API’s
PayPal will also soon launch a set of HTML5 API’s that will enable developers to integrate in-context, in-app payments in HTML5.

OK… back to the keynote but had to share. For more info, check out Ben Parr’s Mashable story.

    Cheers,

Patagonia Let’s Customers Buy and Sell Clothes On a New eBay Store
Patagonia announced this week it will be partnering with eBay to open a marketplace for the company’s used products as part of its sustainability plan. The online eBay store, called the Common Threads Initiative, will be open to any eBay seller wishing to sell genuine Patagonia products. By signing a pledge, community sellers will be given a badge on their post and will be included under the store’s umbrella, as well as promoted on the Used Clothing & Gear section on the Patagonia site. eBay Acquires The Gifts Project
This week eBay acquired the technology and team behind The Gifts Project, a social commerce platform that enables multiple friends to pitch in towards an item for a birthday or other event. In January this year, The Gifts Project signed a cooperation agreement with eBay, under which eBay offered group gift buying through the company’s technology. The Gifts Project will report to eBay’s new VP of social commerce, Don Bradford, who joined eBay in May after working at both Microsoft and Yahoo. [via All Things D]

    Looking Back on eBay Ink
September 14, 2010: eBay CEO, John Donahoe, joined Michel Gelobter, the founder of Cooler and Eileen Claussen, president of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, on a panel discussion at the National Press Club earlier today. The topic of discussion? A report released by Michel Gelobter of carbon-footprint consulting firm, Cooler. Commissioned by eBay, the report highlights the environmental value of enabling consumer-to-consumer online selling and supporting online entrepreneurs and small businesses to compete globally against larger retailers. It’s pretty incredible when one breaks down the numbers. For example, compared to a single big box retail store grossing $100 million per year, new data reveals that the day-to-day operations of $100 million in sales through small, Web-based businesses generate approximately 1,400 tons fewer CO2-equivalent emissions per year than their offline counterparts: that’s the same amount of energy it takes to power 108 homes for a year.

    PayPal Exec Comments on Competition
In an interview with CNET, PayPal’s Sam Shrauger, vice president of global product and design, commented that services seeking to mimic or compete with PayPal, will face a slew of challenges, “Being in the payments business is harder than saying you’re in the payments business.” As most of the industry is focusing on a technology called near-field communications, PayPal PayPal isn’t going to mandate the use of any specific technology. eBay Inc. Reports Strong Q2 2011 Results
On Wednesday eBay Inc. reported revenue for Q2FY2011 increased 25% to $2.8 billion, compared to the same period in 2010. Spearheading eBay’s change, Chief Executive Officer John Donahoe, has made at least nine acquisitions in the past year to expand into new businesses. The year-over-year increase in second quarter non-GAAP earnings per diluted share was driven by solid top-line growth and productivity. [via eBay Ink]

eBay’s PayPal Payments Going Offline With Point of Sale Product
John Donahoe, eBay CEO, recently spoke with analysts regarding the new change in the global commerce landscape. In the new retail world, Donahoe believes physical stores will become just another point of access for shoppers, and PayPal will extend payment capability to point-of-sale in the offline world. In 2012, PayPal expects up to 20 national retailers using its point of sale service. [via Forbes]

    Looking Back on eBay Ink
July 20, 2010: In what can only be described as remarkable, the eBay community has surpassed the $200 million mark for cumulative funds raised with eBay Giving Works since 2003. This represents year-over-year double digit growth. It goes without saying that the fact that $50 million was raised in 2009 alone, coupled with the unbelievable final auction price of the lunch with Warren Buffett (the highest value charity auction ever sold on eBay at $2.63 million), greatly contributed to this superb achievement.
