Planned PayPal Site Outage for April 19

    From the PayPal Blog:

To ensure that PayPal continues to offer the best possible products and services to our customers, we are planning a technology migration of our data center on Thursday, April 19, 2012, starting at approximately 10 p.m. PT. We expect it to last 45- 60 minutes. During this time, there will be a system-wide interruption to the PayPal service and our website. This means that customers will not be able to log into or use their PayPal accounts. Rest assured that, during this time, all funds will be secured as usual by PayPal’s powerful security and fraud protection.

Please check @askPayPal on Twitter, the PayPal Facebook page and The PayPal Blog for confirmation that the outage has concluded. Once the migration is complete, consumers and merchants will be up and running again, business as usual. This technology migration will set us up for some of the planned future product innovations that users will start to see over the next several months.

    Cheers,
    RBH

5 Minutes with… David Marcus, President of PayPal

As announced earlier, PayPal has a new president in David Marcus and I was fortunate enough to spend some time with him to talk about his background and his vision for PayPal going forward. We also talked about his belief in the customer and the need for executives to connect directly with customers through social channels. I’ve been a fan since we first met earlier this year and I’m genuinely excited that a true entrepreneur is at the helm of our payments business. Here you go…

Introducing PayPal Here: The Future of Commerce for Small Business

It has been a busy week for PayPal. On the heels of unveiling the new PayPal Digital Wallet, today they are introducing PayPal Here.

    From the PayPal Blog:
PayPal Here is the world’s first global mobile payment solution that allows small businesses to accept almost any form of payment. It’s designed to help those merchants make more sales and grow their business with confidence. And it gives them choices. They can accept payments by swiping cards with a fully encrypted thumb-sized card reader, or use a phone camera to scan and process cards and checks. It also allows them to invoice directly from the mobile app and, of course, accept PayPal in a brand new way.

For more information and to check out a demo, please see the latest PayPal Here blog post.

    Cheers,

PayPal unveils new Digital Wallet at SXSW 2012

PayPal won’t begin rolling out the new features until late May but Sam Shrauger, VP of global product and experience at PayPal, presented the all-new PayPal digital wallet at SXSW today. Thankfully I managed to catch up with him and get an exclusive demo of the wallet in action before he took the stage. (I say thankfully because his presentation was at capacity and yours truly couldn’t even get in!)

Sam walked through his entire demo for the Ink audience and I’ve split the interview into two parts.

Here are some of the highlights of what you’ll be able to do:

Separate the purchase from the payment: Buy something in a store, take it home and decide later how you want to pay for it. PayPal is the only wallet that will offer a 5-7 day grace period for consumers to change their minds.
    * Switch from one funding source to another
    * Decide to pay over time in installments
    * Apply different sources of value (gift cards, airline miles, loyalty points, etc.)

Personal Lists: Search for items, compare prices and create lists of things you want to buy for a variety of situations.

Found Money: Your wallet will find deals and coupons for items on your personal lists once you’re in the store. Forgot about that coupon you were saving? The PayPal wallet won’t.

Spending Rules. Create specific “set asides” like travel funds, set rules by purchase amount, tie specific payment instruments to specific merchants – all in your wallet, without setting up any new bank accounts or opening any new credit cards.

You can learn more about it over on the PayPal blog.

Check out our eBay at SXSW overview for details of all we have going on here this week.

For those of you on Twitter, please follow our @ebayinkblog handle for live-coverage of everything eBay here at SXSW and check out the hashtag #eBayatSXSW.

eBay Inc. at SXSW: An Overview

I’m on the ground here again in Austin for SXSW 2012. eBay Inc. has a number of speaking engagements and activities happening around this year’s conference and I’m here to cover it all from today through Wednesday.

I sat down with RedLaser GM, Rob Veres, to chat about what’s happening here in Austin this week:

Rob’s panel, Taming the Market in your Pocket, is from 9:30 – 10:30am on Monday, March 12 in the Sabine room of the Hilton Garden Inn. The hashtag to follow along with that particular panel is #TameMarket. Rob will be joined by Tamara Mendelsohn of Eventbrite and Michael Shim of Groupon. The panel will be moderated by Andrew Vilcsak of Airnbnb.

    Stand 501, 503, 505, 507, 600, 602, 604, 606

    PayPal
Sam Shrauger, VP of Global Product & Experience, PayPal will be giving a sneak peek of the all-new PayPal wallet.

    From his PayPal Blog post:
During my session, I’ll demo an intelligent wallet that will do for digital money what internet mash-ups did for digital information: free it, so you can connect it, filter it, personalize it, share it and make it work the way that you want it to. Because PayPal’s wallet is digital – not just mobile, digital – it lets consumers do things with their money that have never been possible before.

His presentation, Why a Mobile Wallet Isn’t Going to be Enough, is on Tuesday, March 13, from 12:30 – 1:30pm in the Rio Grande room of the Hilton Garden Inn. You can also follow all discussion around the PayPal Wallet using the hashtag: #PPWallet

Don Kingsborough, VP of Retail, PayPal will be participating in the From Leather to Smartphone: The Wallet Evolves panel on Tuesday, March 13 from 5:00 – 6:00pm in the same room as Sam Shrauger’s presentation (see above). He will be joined by Jim Mccarthy of Visa and Steve Schultz of Pageonce. The panel will be moderated by Lauren Goode of AllThingsD.

eBay and PayPal announce new partnerships at Mobile World Congress

The Mobile World Congress is in full swing in Barcelona and John Donahoe kicked off our week over there by announcing a new partnership with major carrier Three.co.uk. The new partnership will allow eBay and PayPal integration with merchants such as Yotel and Entradas.com, and also mobile app updates. The partnership will also deliver mobile devices pre-loaded with eBay apps, providing customers a quick and easy direct shopping experience.

The announcement underscores eBay’s commitment to leading mobile commerce innovation and building a mobile commerce ecosystem with carriers, merchants and consumers worldwide. In 2011, eBay mobile commerce generated $5 billion in retail volume, and PayPal mobile generated $4 billion in payment volume. As mobile becomes a leading goal for eBay and PayPal, PayPal announced at MWC the new PayPal Carrier Payment Network and also partnerships with Entradas.com and Yotel, allowing customers to save time when booking tickets and hotels.

“Mobile commerce is changing the way people shop and pay, and the ways in which merchants of all sizes engage consumers,” said John Donahoe, eBay Inc. President and CEO. “We’re seeing a new retail paradigm emerge through mobile. Consumers are in control, and they want to shop anytime, anywhere. That creates opportunity. eBay is driving mobile commerce innovation, partnering with carriers and merchants to build a new retail ecosystem that drives growth by delivering anytime, anywhere value and rich multichannel shopping experiences for consumers.”

    Cheers,
    RBH

[UPDATED WITH VIDEO] eBay enables record amount of socially conscious commerce in 2011

    eGW_image

We announced this morning that eBay buyers and sellers generated a record $63 million in 2011 for charitable causes. Donating an average of $120 a minute, donations in 2011 experienced a 15 percent increase over the prior year. In addition, PayPal processed $3 billion in transactions for more than 200,000 nonprofit organizations, a 31 percent year-over-year increase.

“eBay and PayPal strive every day to make a difference in the world, and cause-related commerce is a powerful way we help merchants and consumers easily and generously give to nonprofits and support people and communities in need,” said John Donahoe, President and CEO of eBay, Inc. “We are committed to using our global commerce platforms and technologies to drive social innovation and create scalable, measurable impact.”

    UPDATED 3/20/12

Here is some additional information on eBay’s socially conscious commerce in 2011:

+ Through the eBay Giving Works platform in the US, UK and now Canada, which launched in August 2011, eBay enables anyone, anytime to easily support favorite charities and causes while shopping for the perfect item.
+ In 2011, eBay launched eBay Celebrity, a shopping destination that combines celebrity experiences, memorabilia and merchandise with philanthropic causes.
+ eBay is the platform of choice for celebrities looking to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes. In 2011 celebrity cause-related commerce efforts included: an auction featuring limited edition Nike Mag sneakers for The Michael J. Fox Foundation – eBay’s biggest charitable auction ever, and Warren Buffet’s annual lunch auction, which sold for a record $2.63 million, supporting Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco.
+ In addition to innovative fundraising tools and giving platforms, eBay and PayPal enable consumers to respond quickly to disasters around the world. In 2011, the eBay community donated $6 million for relief efforts in the wake of the earthquake in Japan and $3.3 million was donated to help end the hunger crisis in the horn of Africa.

Continuing the socially conscious commerce theme, I will be hosting a Twitter chat on Thursday, February 16 from 4-5pm PT with the Goodwill Industries and eBay Giving works team. We will discussing social and online giving, and the philanthropic tools that can benefit donations, advocacy and online communities. Follow the conversation here at http://www.ebayinkblog.com, or follow online by using the #SocialGiving hashtag. Make sure to follow our friends at @GoodwillIntl and @ebaygiving too.

The PayPal 1099-K: What is it?

Last month I was fortunate enough to attend the Las Vegas Online Seller Meetup and sit in on a presentation by Laura Messerschmitt, VP of Marketing, Outright.com regarding the new tax form called the 1099-K. Rather than paraphrase some of the details from that presentation, I thought it would be better to have Laura put together an overview for eBay Ink readers first-hand. A huge thanks to Laura for taking the time to share this info with our readers.

    Cheers,
    RBH

Tax time – It’s here again! You’ve probably been receiving those pesky little 1099 tax forms in the mail over the last few weeks. And, If you haven’t heard, there’s a brand new tax form that may have arrived in your mailbox this year. It’s called the 1099-K. 53 Million of these forms are being sent out this year, which means that businesses of all shapes and sizes are going to receive this new form – but, since this is eBay Ink, we are going to focus on what this means for you, the eBay Seller.

Though it seems that it came out of nowhere, the origins of the 1099-K go back a few years. With the passing of the 2008 Housing Assistance Tax Act, Congress required that all credit card processors and third party payment processors, like PayPal, issue form 1099-K to people who receive income through those sources starting in 2011. One copy is sent to you and one is sent to the IRS.

    Who gets it?
Not everyone who sells on eBay will get one. There are two big criteria you must meet:

** You must have made over $20,000 through one credit card processor, such as PayPal AND
** That $20K must have been made through 200 or more transactions

If you don’t meet either one of those criteria, then you won’t be getting the 1099-K form this year.

    The Details
For those of you who did receive one, the 1099-K form shows your “gross sales”. There’s been lots of confusion about what is and is not included in that total. “Gross sales” includes all of your selling transactions. Refunds and fees are NOT taken out of that number. Shipping revenue IS included. That’s why the number may seem a bit higher than you were expecting.

But, don’t fear! You only pay taxes on profit (revenue minus expenses), not “gross sales”. Your expenses may include such things as PayPal / eBay fees, returns, refunds, shipping costs, supplies, etc. All of those expenses that you incurred last year will reduce the taxes you may owe.

(Note: Both fees and returns are important for eBay sellers to track in order to reduce taxes. If you didn’t track those throughout the year, PayPal provides a CSV file of all of your transactions from 2011. Alternatively, a free account at Outright.com can automatically download your PayPal transactions from last year and sum up the fees and returns for you.)

Net-net, this new tax form shouldn’t send you over the edge. And, if getting your taxes done sends you running around the room like a 2-year-old with a lollipop, then please visit Outright’s Tax and 1099-K Resource Center or PayPal’s handy IRS Information Center for more information on 1099-K and self-employment taxes in general!

    Cheers!
    LM
