eBay Inc. took first place in the Mobile Commerce Daily competition for the 2009 Mobile Retailer of the Year award.
Mobile Commerce Daily indicated that “there were many worthy nominations, but after careful consideration, eBay did an outstanding job in its mobile efforts,” citing the high number of items bought via mobile on eBay this past holiday season (1.5 million) and the generation of more than a half a billion dollars of transactions via mobile in 2009. On Tuesday, Jan. 12 shortly before 5 p.m., a 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. According to The Red Cross, about 3 million people were affected by the quake — one-third of Haiti’s population.
In the wake of the devastating quake, more than 100,000 people are feared dead with thousands of others injured or without homes. Reports from the scene say that getting aid to the injured is difficult because many hospitals have been destroyed and medical supplies and heavy equipment are desperately needed. (More …)

eBay indicated in a press release earlier today that the number of items bought via eBay mobile apps were triple last year’s holiday volume and that eBay buyers and sellers are generating more than half a billion dollars of transactions via mobile in 2009.
Nearly 6 million people have eBay on their iPhone and eBay receives three-quarters of a million unique visits a day via mobile apps. (More …)

People never cease to amaze me. At a time that sees everyone tightening their budgets and thinner in the wallet, eBay buyers and sellers raised a record $50 million for U.S. and U.K. non-profit organizations in 2009 – a 17% jump since last year. Users have contributed an amazing $162 million to their favorite causes through eBay Giving Works since 2003.
Every little bit helps
While funds raised by nonprofits are at an all-time low, this year’s eBay Giving Works figures were released during a year of significant growth for online fundraising. Online giving is growing at 44% per year, seven times faster than offline giving growth. Online giving has enabled charities to leverage the power of the individual through smaller, more modest donations. (More …)

Okay, not really the North Pole, but it’s Julie Haddon who not only was one of the leads for eBay’s Holiday Campaign, but is also one of our Social Media gurus, who will talk about the latest craze that is the Zhu Zhu Pets.

As you’ve probably heard about or seen, the popular Zhu Zhu Pets have taken over the world. Okay, well not the world but at least these endearing and fine-furred friends have become the hit toy this holiday season, attracting more than one million searches on eBay over Thanksgiving weekend alone. It’s been a breakout hamster hit reminiscent of toy crazes of yesteryear, such as Tickle Me Elmo and Cabbage Patch Kids. A shortage of the Zhu Zhu Pets led to an increase in listings on eBay which grew at 10% per day.

eBay released more figures today regarding transactions made on the online marketplace over the Black Friday / Cyber Monday shopping period. The number of transactions on Cyber Monday increased by approximately 35% over Black Friday with each day yielding more than 1 million transactions.

After all the turkey, beer, stuffing, wine, pork, beer, mashed potatoes, wine, pumpkin pie and wine that I had on Thursday I can’t imagine heading to the mall in the middle of the night to try and find the latest deal. After hosting an even dozen family and friends it was all I could do to login to eBay and check out all the deals without leaving the house on “Black Friday.” Looking at the hi-tech, flashy “heat map” over on the eBay Holiday site, I wasn’t alone.
Essentially, eBay has created a transaction map of the United States that spans the duration of yesterday’s Black Friday shopping activity on the site. The map is a visualization of U.S.-based buyer and seller transactions over that 24-hour period. (More …)

eBay has released a new “Deals” application available now for free from the iTunes app store. The new app provides a constant stream of the best deals across hundreds of millions of ebay.com listings and features simple navigation, customizable search features and PayPal integration that makes check-out fast and easy.
The Deals app is the latest addition to eBay’s mobile offerings; eBay also just released an upgraded version of its eBay iPhone app with new features such as social networking integration. (More …)
