eBay’s Topaz Data Center Gets Even Greener

Many of you will remember that in the spring of 2010 we opened Topaz, our first wholly-owned data center in South Jordan (which was awarded LEED Gold status by the US Green Building Council). Since then we’ve continued to invest in Utah and worked to demonstrate our commitment to make our operations there even more efficient and sustainable.

    eBay Topaz Data Center

Today, we are announcing eBay’s largest solar installation to date, atop the Topaz data center. The installation includes a 665 kilowatt (kW) solar power system, designed and installed by SPG Solar, featuring 72,000 square feet of solar panels, covering virtually every inch of roof space on the data center. The installation will produce 924,013 kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually, which is equivalent to offsetting 702 tons of greenhouse gas emissions or planting 136 acres of pine forests. In addition to the environmental benefits, we anticipate the installation will pay for itself in just four years. The Topaz solar array, along with our 650 kW array and 500 kW Bloom Fuel cell installation at our San Jose headquarters and our 100 kW solar array in Denver, brings our total renewable energy capacity to almost 2 Megawatts. To put that in perspective, that’s equivalent to about 11% of our total US data center electricity demand.

eBay Topaz Data Center Achieves LEED Gold #ebaynews

eBay opened its Topaz data center earlier this year. Topaz stands as a centerpiece of a multi-year plan to consolidate eBay’s data center footprint from a number of co-located facilities to fewer eBay-owned, operated, and managed centers. Our data centers make up more that 50% of our global power usage.

Dean Nelson, the man leading the charge in building Topaz from the ground up, has a guest blog post over on Green Team Talks:

From the beginning of the design process, every construction decision was looked at with energy efficiency and environmental responsibility in mind. We are also able to make use of Utah’s cool and dry climate to cool the data center for over half of the year which enables the facility to shut down expensive to run chillers.

This month, the team got some great news – the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the facility the prestigious LEED® Gold certification, verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). Topaz becomes one of only a small handful of data centers on U.S. soil to achieve LEED Gold – a pretty major accomplishment considering the availability and security requirements needed to run eBay AND PayPal’s servers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

A huge congrats to Dean and his team. Read all about it over on the Green Team Talks blog.

Also, be sure to follow @ebaygreen on Twitter too.

    Cheers!

    Minty Fresh!

    John Cutting the Vine

I was able to spend this afternoon at the new, beautiful and very “green” building that had been, up until today, only been known as Building 17. Residing on the North campus of eBay, San Jose, Building 17 was officially opened today by eBay CEO, John Donahoe, San Jose Mayor, Chuck Reed and President of PayPal, Scott Thompson (shown above, officially cutting the vine that opened the building).

800 separate naming suggestions were submitted by employees for consideration as the official name of Building 17. Ranging from the rather long but humorous, “Al Gore’s Love Child” to the baseball-centric “Green Monster.” However, the name that beat out all others was simply “Mint”.
