I have been fortunate to sit in on a few Kijiji and eBay Classifieds meetings over the past year and I’m always left feeling inspired after getting a chance to sit down with General Manager of Kijiji US, Martin Herbst. His passion for what he does on a daily basis is infectious. He and his team had given me a heads up last week about some key enhancements to the Kijiji US site which at first glance may not seem so significant but together they really reflect one of his team’s goals of enabling an easy-to-use marketplace to help families find better values and new jobs. eBay is no stranger to running tests across its platforms. In the Classifieds Group, for example, they opened up Spanish language sites in Texas and Florida last year to see if the bilingual communities in those States would find it useful. They also tested Gumtree –known very well in the UK – in Boston, Chicago and New York for the expatriates living in those cities. -

eBay Acquires Leading Classifieds Companies in Denmark
eBay Inc. has acquired Den Bla Avis and Bilbasen, two leading online classifieds sites in Denmark, for approximately $390 million USD. The acquisition marks eBay’s entry into the Danish e-commerce market, provides an opportunity to create a national classifieds business there, and further strengthens eBay’s world-leading portfolio of online classifieds sites.
Founded as printed classified advertising circulars, Den Bla Avis and Bilbasen have successfully made the transition to fast-growing, profitable online businesses while maintaining the publication of its circulars. Den Bla Avis and Bilbasen have offices in Aarhus and Copenhagen, Denmark.
Den Bla Avis operates dba.dk, an online classifieds site in Denmark and is one of the leading Internet properties in the country. It currently draws approximately 25 percent of the Danish population with approximately 120 million page views per month. Bilbasen, bilbasen.dk, is the leading vehicle classifieds site in Denmark and has approximately 66 million page views per month.

A growing global portfolio

Oodles of Opportunities
Wal-Mart quietly launched its own Classified Listings service at the end of last month partnering with Oodle to deliver the service. With the recent headline-grabbing news for online classifieds with both eBay’s Kijiji and Craigslist, I was surprised that this only raised a few eyebrows online. Although, it does confirm what we talked about on Ink last month; that the U.S. classifieds market continues to grow and represents the largest eCommerce market in the world… with still endless opportunities to grow further.

There has been a lot of discussion over the past few weeks about the redacted complaint made public by eBay regarding its lawsuit with Craigslist and, more recently, with Craigslist’s lawsuit with eBay filed last week. I have been approached by a number of Ink readers and employees at eBay asking me why I have chosen NOT to address it here (after all, if Craigslist addresses on its own blog here, and here why not eBay?).
