eBay Technology Center of Excellence Coming to the Big Apple #ebaynews

Tebowmania isn’t the only thing heading East and hitting the Big Apple this Fall. Today, we announced our newest eBay Technology Center of Excellence based in New York City. Located at 625 6th Avenue, the office will welcome the Hunch team (acquired by eBay in late 2011), and expand to more than 200 people over the next couple of years – most of whom will work on cool technology and data programs that are critical to the eBay experience.

The office will be led by Hunch co-founder Chris Dixon and is expected to be an amazing open, bright space when it opens in fall 2012. It will also feature:
    * Large public event area
    * Dedicated space for start-up and entrepreneur incubation
    * A permanent installation of the PayPal Shopping Showcase, which highlights the new digital payments evolution that PayPal is powering

If you’ve been following eBay Ink over the past couple of years you’d be hard pressed to miss the technology updates and new products that have been taking center stage. Whether it’s a brand-new homepage, dedication to a new search engine, mobile leadership, or commerce innovation, eBay is truly a tech company, and it definitely doesn’t seem to be shifting that focus anytime soon.

This tech focus has not been isolated to Silicon Valley and the expansion doesn’t start and end in NYC either. For instance, in January, eBay opened a new technology center of excellence in the Seattle area. Led by Ken Moss, this team is at the cutting edge of data mining, Hadoop, machine learning and more.

    B. Altman (1877), 625 Sixth Avenue, New York, New York

Located in the Flatiron District, the historic 625 6th Avenue was built in the late 1870s and once housed the B. Altman & Co. department store.

The NYC office will be eBay’s latest center of excellence, one of several prestigious hubs for eBay Inc. that focus on technical development and engineering as well as customer service, shipping and other disciplines that are crucial to the way eBay operates and innovates. There are several centers all over the world in cities including Seattle, Austin, and Tel Aviv, Portland as eBay expands its presence to acquire, recruit and retain technology talent.

This investment allows us to build a long-term presence in NYC and is the latest in our commitment to advancing technologists and technology in centers around the world.

I’ll keep you posted on grand opening plans – maybe we can grab a beer together on that new roof deck in the Fall?

    Cheers,
    RBH

[INFOGRAPHIC] I Won it on eBay

eBay released the below infographic this morning that uses Hunch data to see what the differences are between people who have bought or sold on eBay, and those who haven’t yet. Hunch became a part of eBay in November of last year and I’m looking forward to meeting the team in New York later this week. In the meantime, there’s lots of fun data in here (although I’m not sure why an eBay user would choose Edinburgh, Scotland over The Bahamas as a vacation destination)…

    Cheers,
    RBH

    eBay acquires recommendation engine Hunch.com

eBay announced this morning that it has acquired the innovative team and technology of Hunch, an online platform launched in 2009 that delivers customized recommendations to its users based on their individual tastes. Hunch’s patented prediction technology – also known as a “taste graph” – uses signals from around the Web to map members with their predicted affinity for products, services, other people, websites, or just about anything, and customizes recommended topics for them.

“With Hunch, we’re adding new capabilities to personalizing the shopping experience on eBay to the individual relevant tastes and interests of our customers, said Mark Carges, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President, Global Products, Marketplaces. “We expect Hunch’s technologies to benefit eBay shoppers as they browse and buy, and to bring sellers on eBay new ways to connect the right products with the right customers.”

Hunch’s co-founder, Chris Dixon, posted to the Hunch blog:

A little over a year ago, we began working with other companies to help them leverage Hunch’s Taste Graph to provide personalization on their own sites as well as data-driven insights about their customers. We’ve also encouraged development of external applications that use our open API. It’s been a rewarding challenge for the entire Hunch team to apply our technology and aggregate data in such flexible ways.

During this period, we met the talented team at eBay. We were struck by the incredible opportunity to put Hunch’s Taste Graph technology to work for one of the undisputed global leaders in ecommerce.

Hunch’s employees will remain with the company, including co-founders Chris Dixon, Tom Pinckney and Matt Gattis. Hunch will continue to be based in New York. I’m very excited to welcome everyone and can’t wait to meet the team in person.
