What better way to understand our customers than to be active buyers and sellers?
eBay employees now have an even easier way to sell on eBay. Introduced this week as a pilot program for employees, the new “Sell it Here” station is located at San Jose, Whitman Campus. Employees will find the Sell it Here station stocked with everything they need to list and sell their items on eBay.
I’m working out of the eBay UK office in Richmond this week and have had some great meetings with a number of folks talking about all things social – from commerce to media to business. I’ve also been able to check out some cool stories coming out of the office here first-hand. Earlier this month, eBay UK launched its first-ever pop-up shop in London’s fashionable West End. The UK’s first-ever QR code shopping emporium, the eBay Christmas Boutique enabled shoppers to browse over 350 items provided by top-rated eBay sellers, who could purchase using mobile technology with just a few clicks.
Although there were physical items on display, all items were purchased on eBay using mobile devices. Naturally, I asked what was going to happen to all of the gifts on display throughout the shop. Turns out that many of the toys and gifts displayed in the Boutique have been donated to children’s charities.
The boutique was open Dec. 1 – 5 and although it meant it was only open for 5 days, they managed to attract over 2,500 walk-in customers. You can check out a full behind-the-scenes video below…
Launching today, a new online video series from eBay – eBay MoneyMakers – will feature families (like the O’Briens featured in these three videos), who have turned to eBay to make money in tough economic situations.
eBay MoneyMakers will also include bonus segments with tips and tricks for mobile selling and finding inventory that contributed to the featured families’ successes (see the two videos below).
“eBay mobile has made our family even more effective at selling – and selling competitively,” said husband and father Tristen O’Brien. “Wherever I am, whenever I want, I can check in on my eBay sales and still enjoy other activities, without being tied to a computer.”
eBay also revealed today that more than 1 Million listings are now made every week by sellers using eBay Mobile.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. These are the stories that get me up in the morning. These are the stories that excite me every day and I’m looking forward to seeing future profiles.

The release of the enhanced app and the release of the new Milo Shopping Mobile iPhone app both come just a day after Christopher Payne, head of eBay Marketplaces North America, gave the keynote presentation at Internet Retailer Conference 2011. In his presentation, Christopher focused heavily on the future of commerce (Commerce 3.0) and the pivotal role both mobile and local will have in the evolution of shopping. Here are some key quotes from his presentation yesterday:
** “Introducing “Fetch” a plug-in that integrates QuickBooks with Milo, allowing a merchant to get their offline inventory onto eBay. “Fetch” is in Beta / free for merchants. We are only accepting data for merchants with Quickbooks POS systems.”
** “eBay believes “Local” is where “Mobile” was 2 years ago. (Hence the RedLaser, Milo and Where acquisitions).”
** “Mobile commerce gives the consumer a store wherever they are and it’s always open.”
** “1 in 6 Americans are accessing the web through a mobile device.”
** “eBay saw $2 billion in sales through mobile platform in 2010. Expects to double that in 2011.”
** “We introduced the first eBay mobile app in 2008. Since then, our apps have been downloaded 45 million times.”
All,
I’m honored to have been invited to speak at the eBay Sellers of the Bay Area meetup later this month (May 31) to talk about all things social media.
I plan on discussing how eBay approaches social media, my philosophy behind blogging, and – probably of most interest to attendees – how sellers can utilize social media tools to enhance their online presence, connect with a broader audience, and ultimately increase sales.
For all the information about the event, and to RSVP, please check out the Meetup Invite.
This group is for eBay sellers to meet, learn, share ideas and help each other. Whether you’re a casual seller wanting to make a few extra dollars by clearing out your garage or a Top Rated Seller earning a living, we are for you.
The group is free and meetups are free. We have an excellent breadth of members – from eBay trained Education Specialists to Trading Assistants to store designers to eBay employees and more.
Griff has a fun collection of the top collectible, antique and art listings for last month over on the eBay Collectors blog…
The Antique and Collectibles categories continue to surface some fantastic examples of what collectors are buying these days on eBay, including a issue #1 of Playboy, a rare New Jersey copper colonial coin, and a period Roman helmet! All these and more displayed below, sold on eBay in March, 2011 and include examples from both auction style and fixed price format sales.
With it being “Bring your Kids to Work Day” I’ve been looking at some of the listings with my two girls. They want you all to know that they’re big fans of the robot but that the antique walking stick is very scary.
Here’s another video collection taken at eBay: On Location – Las Vegas. Thanks again to @ebay_andy for the footage. All of the clothing and accessories (minus the parrot) featured in the below video were/are for sale on eBay.com. I’ve included the eBay seller IDs with each catwalk.
We have a number of folks roaming the halls of eBay: On Location capturing presentations and conversations with attendees. Please check out both the eBay YouTube channel and the eBay Ink YouTube channel for all the videos coming out of the show… for now, check out this convo with relatively new sellers ebargains4u2:
All,
I’m looking forward to seeing folks at the eBay: On Location Dallas event this coming weekend. Over the course of this week, I’ll be posting some behind the scenes interviews and footage from the past event in Atlanta. In the meantime, if you are going to be attending, please be sure to also register for the eBayOL Dallas “After Hours Reception.” I just RSVP’d myself. Not sure which eBay “special guest”(s) I’ll have accompanying me but will definitely be a fun, informative night. (More …)
eBay has relaunched its online classifieds site in the US as eBayClassifieds.com with an emphasis on trust and safety, customer service and user experience. Armed with my Flipcam and the new logo I managed to track down Martin Herbst, GM of eBay Classifieds, to ask him a few questions about today’s news:
