Today is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. In 1970, based largely on the work of a Senator from Wisconsin, there was a nation-wide demonstration in honor of the environment. There were parades and marches and sit-ins at universities. It was one of the very first moments when the notion of, “Think Global, Act Local,” became a reality.
eBay introduced eBay Fashion today, a new enhanced shopping experience for clothing, shoes and accessories on eBay. I sat down with eBay Pop Culture expert, Karen Bard, to talk a little more about today’s news…
The U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeal’s ruled that eBay is meeting its responsibilities in fighting counterfeiting under trademark law earlier today. This decision affirmed a lower court’s ruling in favor of eBay. Michael R. Jacobson, eBay general counsel, was quoted, saying:
“The decision is a critically important victory for online consumers who want the best prices for genuine products and underscores eBay’s commitment to connecting buyers and sellers under the pillars of trust, value, and selection. (More …)

The second annual Social Innovation Awards were held in New York City last night and eBay’s Green Team received the social innovator award for employee engagement. The event – which recognizes corporations and nonprofits for implementing groundbreaking business strategies and programs – is organized by JustMeans, an organization that bridges the worlds of social media and corporate responsibility, and the Financial Times.
Today, more than 2,400 eBay employees in 23 countries are Green Team members. That’s roughly 15% of our global workforce, all of whom are supporting environmental causes in their local communities and promoting sustainable business practices within eBay – often during lunch breaks, at night and even on weekends.
Through the Green Team, we try to encourage all employees to participate with initiatives like our recent Big Green Idea contest, which invited more than 15,000 employees around the globe to submit ideas for how they would make eBay a greener company. Together with eBay’s CEO John Donahoe, employees voted on their favorites and helped us choose which projects to focus on implementing this year.
It’s a huge accomplishment and I just wanted to personally congratulate the team that made it happen. Excellent job!
I was unable to make it down to SXSW this year which means I’m missing the keynote presentation by Twitter‘s Evan Williams. However, according to a post just made on the Twitter blog, a new Twitter development – called “@anywhere” – is coming soon to a handful of leading web sites including the eBay Marketplace. Something I believe @Ev is talking about right now.
The post:
@anywhere
When we designed Twitter, we took a different approach—we didn’t require a relationship model like that of a social network. Keeping things open meant you could browse our site to read tweets from friends, celebrities, companies, media outlets, fictional characters, and more. You could follow any account and be followed by any account. As a result, companies started interacting with customers, celebrities connected with fans, governments became more transparent, and people started discovering and sharing information in a new, participatory manner. All,
I’m still answering specific questions through email and comments here on Ink but in the meantime, I wanted to share a little sneak peak into what is happening behind the scenes. In addition to our usual Customer Service call center and PR efforts around news like this, we have also established two dedicated Communications rooms to allow for real-time collaboration across social media platforms and chat rooms to ensure we could get answers out to folks as quickly as possible. These have been staffed since 6am PT yesterday morning and include folks, such as myself, focused on communicating through a specific channel (forums, blogs, Twitter, email, etc.).
I took a quick video of our Comms Room here in San Jose HQ to give folks a behind-the-scenes look at how we’re working together to communicate information in real-time. The desks are set up in a horseshoe so we can easily ask questions to anyone in the room (representatives from the Buyer & Seller team, Corp Comms, Social Media, Engineering, eBay Annnouncements, etc. are all in here) for quick response…
Out in Salt Lake City, in addition to the Customer Service center, we have another comms room devoted to social media outreach and response. What follows is a sequence of photos taken out of that room where you can see folks on Twitter, Facebook, etc…
Personally, it has been great to see so many people involved in proactively communicating information – regardless of channel or platform. As a global organization, I am hoping we can build on this for the future.
