John Donahoe: “eBay Mobile GMV will surpass $8 Billion in 2012”

eBay CEO, John Donahoe, on stage at CEA Leaders in Tech dinner

It has been a busy two days here at CES 2012 with eBay Inc. speaking on a number of industry panels. This evening saw our CEO, John Donahoe, take the stage (above) to keynote the CEA Leaders in Technology Dinner (that I’m currently attending). I’ve been live-tweeting the proceedings but wanted to share some projections that John just announced. eBay is projecting 2012 global mobile gross merchandise volume (GMV) to surpass $8 billion. PayPal projects that its global mobile total payment volume (TPV) will be $7 billion in 2012.

“Mobile plays a significant role in how eBay Inc. is enabling commerce and using technology to connect consumers and provide new ways for them to shop when, where and how they want,” said Donahoe. “The success of eBay and PayPal mobile in 2011 surpassed our expectations and we’re confident that this success will carry into 2012 as more shoppers turn to the convenience of shopping and paying via mobile at the moment shopping inspiration hits.”

eBay Inc. anticipates continued growth in mobile sales and payments in 2012 as shopping on smartphones and tablet devices becomes increasingly common among shoppers around the globe. eBay’s global mobile GMV reached $5 billion in 2011, more than doubling 2010 global mobile GMV of nearly $2 billion. PayPal global mobile TPV was $4 billion in 2011.

eBay Inc. at CES 2012 – Day 1 recap

    International CES 2012 kicks off

I attended two industry panels here at CES 2012 yesterday that eBay Inc. was participating in and both were focused on the incredible growth in mobile.

Mobile Payment Basics: How the Technology Works

    Panelists:
David Marcus, VP/GM of Mobile for PayPal
    Andrew Paradise, CEO of Aislebuyer,
Bill Gajda, Head of Mobile, VISA
Scott Nichols, Director of IPX/M-Commerce, North America Ericsson
Todd Ablowitz, President of Double Diamond Group

David Marcus, VP/GM of Mobile for PayPal CES 2012

Todd moderated the panel and the participants discussed everything from the emergence of the digital wallet to the concept of “wallet in the cloud” vs NFC (near field communications) solutions. “We see the wallet in the cloud as the best way to bridge the gap between the online and offline world,” said David Marcus. Andrew Paradise concurred, “if I lose my iPhone,” he said, “I don’t want to have to cancel all my credit cards. It would be no different than losing my wallet.” Bill Gajda was more in favor of localized solutions (NFC) but stressed that “whatever technology we end up using, it’s all going to come down to the widespread education and adoption by the individual merchants.”

It was agreed by all that we’ve been hearing about the digital wallet for quite some time now but 2012 could be the year that it truly “arrives.” PayPal’s David Marcus illustrated the growth in mobile payments by announcing that PayPal exceeded expectations for 2011, reaching $4 billion in mobile payment volume (a significant increase from the original prediction of $1.5 billion).

    Planet of the Apps

    Panelists:
Steve Yankovich, VP of eBay Mobile
Andrew Maltin, CEO of MEDL Mobile
Azita Arvani, Principal, Mobile and Wireless for the Arvani Group Inc.
Chris Hercik, Creative Director, Sports Illustrated Group
Jon Summers, SVP Applications and Service Infrastructure, AT&T

Planet of the Apps Panel at CES 2012

The panelists discussed trends they’d seen in mobile apps for 2011 and those that they predicted for 2012. eBay Mobile’s Steve Yankovich talked about the emergence and proliferation of QR Codes in 2011 and predicted that “apps that utilize the camera on mobile devices will be the next trend we see in 2012.”

Chris Hercik of Sports Illustrated emphasized the need for organizations to adapt and react to shifts in consumer behavior. For example, “readers of the tablet app for Sports Illustrated are now asking for good, interactive ads, rather than rejecting or being put off by them.” He also went on to say that introducing new ways of presenting existing content (digitizing Sports Illustrated for example) isn’t just an external messaging process. “There’s an internal learning curve too when evolving a long-standing, established brand into app form.”

“Everything we do is about the transaction. About connecting the buyer and seller,” said Steve Yankovich, when asked about eBay’s role in mobile transactions. “eBay is just the plumbing.”

Steve went on to say that eBay Mobile met 2011 projections for mobile sales and payments, respectively. eBay’s global mobile gross merchandise volume (GMV) reached $5 billion in 2011.

INFOGRAPHIC: eBay’s Annual “Top Shopped” for 2011

eBay announced its third annual “Top Shopped” report this morning, ranking the pop culture moments and trends based on related items sold on the eBay Marketplace.

At first glance to me, there didn’t seem to be any shock here; NFL, Twilight, Glee, iPad, etc. all seem to be obvious cultural winners. However, seeing Sade come in at the #7 spot – ahead of Justin Bieber (#8) – came as a pleasant surprise. Nice to see an artist that came out when I was a teenager pip the current teen heartthrob at the post.

    eBay Top Shopped Final 2011

For more stats and figures, check out the eBay “Top Shopped” for 2011 media alert. For now, I’ll leave you with this little tidbit regarding eBay Mobile:

Top Three Most Expensive Cross-Category Purchases on eBay Mobile:
    ** Motors | Mercedes-Benz : S-Class: $212,685
** Fashion | Hermes Blue Sapphire Ostrich Birkin Bag: $19,975
    ** Collectibles | 1933 Goudey – Babe Ruth #53 PSA Baseball Card: $19,500

Updates to RedLaser for Android; introducing RedLaser for Windows Phone 7; and Scan to Win with RedLaser Games

I covered the RedLaser 3.0 for iPhone release last month on Ink. Today marks another day of firsts for eBay Mobile‘s leading scanning mobile application.

With RedLaser for Android, users will now be able to create and share product lists with their peers. In the past users have been able to search by typed and spoken word. Now, they will have the ability to image search. Users can now take a photo and it will then do a product search for that photo using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). You could essentially take a picture of The Beatles White Album and RedLaser would then find specific listings of that album and related items.

RedLaser has also created a brand new application that will now be available in the Windows marketplace. This app features some of the best technologies that RedLaser has to offer including:
** Streamlined barcode scanning for comparison shopping the best prices online and locally (local US only)
** Updated list and QR code capabilities to share with peers

    Introducing the RedLaser Games

We’re also inviting iPhone and Android users to “Train Up” for the holiday shopping season. The company launched a new video campaign series featuring barcode scanning “expert,” Redd ‘The Laser’ Laser (one of my favorites is above). Redd is also offering RedLaser users a chance to win his RedLaser Holiday Wish List, including great prizes like a GoPro® HD Helmet Video Camera, an Apple® iPhone® 4s and more, plus $2,500 towards their own wish list.

For entry, participants simply use the new RedLaser list feature to create their own holiday wish list and scan at least five items to add to it. They then click “share” right from the app and e-mail their RedLaser Games lists to games@redlaser.com. The promotion is running from Black Friday (November 25) through December 23. There will be one winner each week for the length of the promotion for a total of 4 grand prize winners. More information and the training videos can be viewed at the RedLaser Games site.

Lots of new stuff there folks. Regardless of which smart phone you use, I wish you all Happy Scanning this Holiday season.

    Cheers!

    Introducing eBay MoneyMakers

Launching today, a new online video series from eBay – eBay MoneyMakers – will feature families (like the O’Briens featured in these three videos), who have turned to eBay to make money in tough economic situations.

eBay MoneyMakers will also include bonus segments with tips and tricks for mobile selling and finding inventory that contributed to the featured families’ successes (see the two videos below).

“eBay mobile has made our family even more effective at selling – and selling competitively,” said husband and father Tristen O’Brien. “Wherever I am, whenever I want, I can check in on my eBay sales and still enjoy other activities, without being tied to a computer.”

eBay also revealed today that more than 1 Million listings are now made every week by sellers using eBay Mobile.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. These are the stories that get me up in the morning. These are the stories that excite me every day and I’m looking forward to seeing future profiles.

    Cheers!

Leveraging the RedLaser technology to predict top trending hot holiday gifts based on shoppers’ scans mobile buying history, eBay is using those mobile customer insights to deliver deals on popular items.
