Hunch infographic shows trends in people that have bought and/or sold on eBay and those that haven't.

eBay released the below infographic this morning that uses Hunch data to see what the differences are between people who have bought or sold on eBay, and those who haven’t yet. Hunch became a part of eBay in November of last year and I’m looking forward to meeting the team in New York later this week. In the meantime, there’s lots of fun data in here (although I’m not sure why an eBay user would choose Edinburgh, Scotland over The Bahamas as a vacation destination)…

Cheers,

Earlier this week, Arthur W. Page Society members attended the Page Society’s West Coast Social Media Summit, hosted and sponsored by eBay Inc., at our company’s headquarters in San Jose, CA. The full-day program focused on emerging trends and the dynamics of an authentic social enterprise, featuring leading experts, innovators and practitioners who are helping to invent and shape new social media engagement models and platforms that are transforming engagement and communications throughout society and business.

Two of the featured speakers were Christopher Barger, SVP of Global Programs for Voce Communications and Connie Chan Wang, Manager of Social Media at LinkedIn.

In particular, he emphasized the differences of – but equal importance of having – both an executive champion for social and a social media evangelist. He also stressed the importance of giving the entire workforce the keys, guidelines and tools to be successful in social media on behalf of the brand.

RecycleBank rewards people for positive green actions (currently the recycling of trash and electronics) and seeks to create a greener economy with key partners across the U.S. In just five years, the model has proven its success; on average, recycling volumes increase two-to-five times and members across the country earn hundreds of dollars in reward value. RecycleBank has programs in hundreds of cities around the country, reaching over one million consumers.

By teaming up with eBay, the RecycleBank program brings consumers online, offering 50 RecycleBank Points for joining eBay’s Green Team. Additionally, RecycleBank members will be able to use their RecycleBank Points for discounts on eBay purchases.

In a world where things rarely seem to shock or surprise anymore, the capacity to give never ceases to amaze me. A donation was made every 24 seconds through eBay Giving Works, raising more than $91 every minute for nonprofits. Nearly 9 million items were listed for sale in 2010 – with all or a portion of the sale price donated to a nonprofit – more than double the items listed in 2009.Since eBay Giving Works was launched in 2003, $230 million has been raised for U.S. and U.K. charities and currently lists over 650,000 charity items on the marketplace.

eBay Inc. President and CEO John Donahoe spoke at the Digital Life Design conference in Munich, Germany on Jan. 24, noting that lines between online and offline commerce are blurring “at a stunningly fast rate.”

eBay Inc. President and CEO John Donahoe spoke at the Digital Life Design conference in Munich, Germany on Jan. 24, noting that lines between online and offline commerce are blurring “at a stunningly fast rate.” For half of retail transactions last year, he said, consumers accessed the web at some point during the shopping experience.

As VentureBeat reported, John predicted more rapid changes in consumer behavior going forward. “I believe that you’re going to see more change in how consumers shop and pay in the next three years than we’ve seen in the last 20 years,” he said. “We’re providing mobile capabilities that consumers are grabbing, but the consumer is in charge here.”

VentureBeat added: “Donahoe talked extensively about eBay’s role as a friend to the retailer — criticizing Amazon’s competitive approach without specifically naming the company — and how through the acquisitions of GSI, RedLaser, and Milo, along with payments solution PayPal, eBay has transformed itself from an auction site to an open commerce platform (X.commerce).”

“We’re enablers,” John said. “The real winners are going to be retailers … the retailers that adopt a multichannel shopping experience.”

The Next Web took note of John’s comments on social commerce and its evolution. “Our platform connects into Facebook’s platform in a very compelling way, and I’d like it to plug in to Google+’s platform too,” he said. “Innovation and social commerce won’t be a big winner-takes-all killer app. It’s going to be a lot of innovative experiments, some of which will really take off.”

On the topic of innovation, The Wall Street Journal reported on John’s comments on eBay’s interest in pioneering start-up companies. “Those are the kinds of companies we are interested in talking to and if you are out there, we’d love to talk.”

Cheers,
