    eBay to Acquire WHI Solutions

eBay Inc. has reached a definitive agreement to acquire WHI Solutions (WHI), a provider of software and digital catalog solutions for auto parts distributors and retailers.

With the innovative team and technology of WHI, eBay gains expanded selection and access to enhanced structured data which we believe will enable eBay Motors to improve parts selection and value for customers while enabling parts retailers, distributors, dealers, and manufacturers to reach more customers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

I’m a fairly stereotypical guy for the most part… I like my beer, my sports, and my action movies. Having said that, I’ve never been much of a gearhead and – in full disclosure – my wife is the one who has negotiated the price of both of my previously owned vehicles. From what I can tell, and I’ve been paying closer and closer attention to it lately, eBay Motors makes it pretty simple to find parts for cars – whether you’re a car enthusiast or not – and the integration of WHI seems to further emphasize that ease of use.

With WHI, eBay plans to expand its catalog – from auto replacement parts to specialty equipment – to meet the needs of the eBay customer. In addition to the catalog benefits for eBay Motors buyers, sellers will also enjoy a better experience with an easier way to list inventory, with automatically populating listing fields including description, image and vehicle application data using WHI’s catalog of millions of SKUs.

The plan is for WHI’s talent, technology and client base to be smoothly integrated into the eBay Motors ecosystem. WHI offices will remain in New York, New Jersey and Los Angeles at this time.

    Cheers,

eBay enabled its users to give a record $63 million, or $120 a minute to charitable causes last year. The PayPal division also processed $3 billion in transactions for more than 200,000 nonprofits. eBay launched the celebrity page in early November, which recently included a $10,200 sale of Miami Marlins shortstop Jose Reyes’ dreadlocks to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. February 16, 2011: eBay has taken the number one spot in a new ranking of the the top social media brands, carried out by Yomego. A number of factors were involved in tabulating the list but from what I can tell it was primarily based on overall reach and satisfaction in determining where companies landed in the Top 50.

eBay enables record amount of socially conscious commerce in 2011

    eGW_image

We announced this morning that eBay buyers and sellers generated a record $63 million in 2011 for charitable causes. Donating an average of $120 a minute, donations in 2011 experienced a 15 percent increase over the prior year. In addition, PayPal processed $3 billion in transactions for more than 200,000 nonprofit organizations, a 31 percent year-over-year increase.

“eBay and PayPal strive every day to make a difference in the world, and cause-related commerce is a powerful way we help merchants and consumers easily and generously give to nonprofits and support people and communities in need,” said John Donahoe, President and CEO of eBay, Inc. “We are committed to using our global commerce platforms and technologies to drive social innovation and create scalable, measurable impact.”

Here is some additional information on eBay’s socially conscious commerce in 2011:

+ Through the eBay Giving Works platform in the US, UK and now Canada, which launched in August 2011, eBay enables anyone, anytime to easily support favorite charities and causes while shopping for the perfect item.
+ In 2011, eBay launched eBay Celebrity, a shopping destination that combines celebrity experiences, memorabilia and merchandise with philanthropic causes.
+ eBay is the platform of choice for celebrities looking to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes. In 2011 celebrity cause-related commerce efforts included: an auction featuring limited edition Nike Mag sneakers for The Michael J. Fox Foundation – eBay’s biggest charitable auction ever, and Warren Buffet’s annual lunch auction, which sold for a record $2.63 million, supporting Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco.
+ In addition to innovative fundraising tools and giving platforms, eBay and PayPal enable consumers to respond quickly to disasters around the world. In 2011, the eBay community donated $6 million for relief efforts in the wake of the earthquake in Japan and $3.3 million was donated to help end the hunger crisis in the horn of Africa.

Continuing the socially conscious commerce theme, I will be hosting a Twitter chat on Thursday, February 16 from 4-5pm PT with the Goodwill Industries and eBay Giving works team. We will discussing social and online giving, and the philanthropic tools that can benefit donations, advocacy and online communities. Follow the conversation here at http://www.ebayinkblog.com, or follow online by using the #SocialGiving hashtag. Make sure to follow our friends at @GoodwillIntl and @ebaygiving too.

PayPal Makes Shopping on the Go Even Easier in Singapore
PayPal just launched a pilot in Singapore’s subway stations for commuters to buy goods while commuting. Commuters can make purchases by using their smartphone to scan a QR code on a billboard or poster and paying through PayPal. The experiment, offering Valentine’s Day gifts at reduced prices, is being conducted across 15 subway stations across Singapore. [via All Things D]

    Looking Back on eBay Ink
February 11th, 2010: eBay Motors today launched an online shopping experience for new vehicles, giving auto dealers and manufacturers an alternative channel to market inventory to local buyers. I just played around with the new interface and it’s incredibly intuitive and easy-to-use. I was able to look for both used and new cars – breaking down to color, make, model, etc. – in less than a minute. The news is good for dealers too because they can now choose from a number of new car selling options including auction, fixed price, best offer or an online classified ad to drive leads. Currently, new cars make up about 13% of all vehicles sold on eBay Motors.

Brian Solis Shares His Thoughts on Social Commerce

Hi all, hope you have been enjoying the new year. I recently spoke with Brian Solis about his new book, “The End of Business As Usual” and he shared his insights on social media, social commerce and more.

If you become as inspired as me after reading Brian’s interview, we welcome you to join us for the free Social Commerce Hub at eBay on February 13, as part of the Social Media Week celebrations. We have a wonderful schedule of talks and panels, and Brian will be joining us as a keynote speaker and for a book signing.

    brian solis book

Sudha: How did you go from your popular book “Engage” to the new one “The End of Business As Usual“?
Brian: People often ask why I didn’t write “The End of Business as Usual” first and then release “Engage” shortly after. “Engage” is focused on the social media champion and over the last several years, the appetite for knowledge on strategic social media intensified. While “Engage” fueled the groundswell for social media champions, “The End of Business as Usual” was written to empower champions of change throughout the organization. They are complementary and together they can transform an organization for a new genre of business.

Sudha: You talk about connecting to the connected customer. Can you explain who is the connected customer and does this apply for all types of target customers for any business?
Brian: Traditional consumers read newspapers and magazines, watch TV and listen to the radio. They talk to their close network of trusted friends and advisers in email and in the real world. Online consumers learn, share, and communicate using web-based products such as websites and search engines, they are avid mobile phone and email users, review products online and also read reviews to make decisions. The connected consumers is just that…they’re connected. They actively curate and create content through social media and their size of influence is exponentially greater than the other two categories of consumers.

Sudha: Social permeates the corporation from all directions and all levels, making it very difficult to offer one framework for various departments to agree on. What type of framework can corporations adapt to become a social business?
Brian: Businesses often say that they desire to get closer to customers. In order to do so, it must be much more than mere words or intention. Actions speak louder than words. In order to get closer to customers, leadership organization needs to foster a culture of customer-centricity.

Sudha: Companies looking to measure ROI of social and social business metrics is one of my favorite topics. What is your advice to keep the balance on adopting social success in a measurable way while keeping the focus on building that relation with the customer?
Brian: I believe that the best way to address ROI or metrics in general is to develop strategies with a meaningful and measurable end in mind and work backwards from there. Most of the cases we look at in social media start with a channel and employ the same elements we often see in traditional marketing campaigns. But, impressions, clickthroughs, reach and to the same extent, retweets, follows, Likes, and share of voice don’t directly translate into return if the return was never documented.

Sudha: Tell us how you see social commerce evolving in 2012
Brian: Commerce is already social, businesses are just slow to realize that they can employ technology to facilitate it at greater levels today. In fact, social commerce is just one part in what must be a syndicated commerce approach. Remember, there are different groups of consumers who make decisions differently, who are influenced differently and as a result take action differently. Syndicated commerce is the big play in 2012 and 2013 as each form of commerce including mobile, e-commerce, F-commerce, in-store, email, etc. require a dedicated and optimized approach.

Sudha: Finally one last questions – You inspire so many people by your books, blogs, talks and keynotes all the time, . I wonder what inspires you?
Brian: I’m inspired by the struggles people have as they try to bring about change. I listen to their questions. I learn from their experiences. I share everything that I know and am learning. I’m motivated by the greater movement we’re each contributing to in our own way. Individually we learn. Together we transform.

Hope to see you at the free Social Commerce Hub at eBay on February 13. Also, feel free to leave any questions for me below.

    Cheers,
    Sudha

The PayPal 1099-K: What is it?

Last month I was fortunate enough to attend the Las Vegas Online Seller Meetup and sit in on a presentation by Laura Messerschmitt, VP of Marketing, Outright.com regarding the new tax form called the 1099-K. Rather than paraphrase some of the details from that presentation, I thought it would be better to have Laura put together an overview for eBay Ink readers first-hand. A huge thanks to Laura for taking the time to share this info with our readers.

    Cheers,
    RBH

Tax time – It’s here again! You’ve probably been receiving those pesky little 1099 tax forms in the mail over the last few weeks. And, If you haven’t heard, there’s a brand new tax form that may have arrived in your mailbox this year. It’s called the 1099-K. 53 Million of these forms are being sent out this year, which means that businesses of all shapes and sizes are going to receive this new form – but, since this is eBay Ink, we are going to focus on what this means for you, the eBay Seller.

Though it seems that it came out of nowhere, the origins of the 1099-K go back a few years. With the passing of the 2008 Housing Assistance Tax Act, Congress required that all credit card processors and third party payment processors, like PayPal, issue form 1099-K to people who receive income through those sources starting in 2011. One copy is sent to you and one is sent to the IRS.

    Who gets it?
Not everyone who sells on eBay will get one. There are two big criteria you must meet:

** You must have made over $20,000 through one credit card processor, such as PayPal AND
** That $20K must have been made through 200 or more transactions

If you don’t meet either one of those criteria, then you won’t be getting the 1099-K form this year.

    The Details
For those of you who did receive one, the 1099-K form shows your “gross sales”. There’s been lots of confusion about what is and is not included in that total. “Gross sales” includes all of your selling transactions. Refunds and fees are NOT taken out of that number. Shipping revenue IS included. That’s why the number may seem a bit higher than you were expecting.

But, don’t fear! You only pay taxes on profit (revenue minus expenses), not “gross sales”. Your expenses may include such things as PayPal / eBay fees, returns, refunds, shipping costs, supplies, etc. All of those expenses that you incurred last year will reduce the taxes you may owe.

(Note: Both fees and returns are important for eBay sellers to track in order to reduce taxes. If you didn’t track those throughout the year, PayPal provides a CSV file of all of your transactions from 2011. Alternatively, a free account at Outright.com can automatically download your PayPal transactions from last year and sum up the fees and returns for you.)

Net-net, this new tax form shouldn’t send you over the edge. And, if getting your taxes done sends you running around the room like a 2-year-old with a lollipop, then please visit Outright’s Tax and 1099-K Resource Center or PayPal’s handy IRS Information Center for more information on 1099-K and self-employment taxes in general!

    Cheers!
    LM

[INFOGRAPHIC] I Won it on eBay

eBay released the below infographic this morning that uses Hunch data to see what the differences are between people who have bought or sold on eBay, and those who haven’t yet. Hunch became a part of eBay in November of last year and I’m looking forward to meeting the team in New York later this week. In the meantime, there’s lots of fun data in here (although I’m not sure why an eBay user would choose Edinburgh, Scotland over The Bahamas as a vacation destination)…
