eBay VP, Tod Cohen, testifies before Congress re: Constitutionality of proposed Sales Tax Law

eBay Vice President and Deputy General Counsel (and fellow Team eBay Movember member), Tod Cohen, testified this morning before the United States House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary. In his remarks, Cohen stressed the importance of this issue for small and medium-sized retailers across the US and outlined Constitutional limitations on U.S. states’ authority to collect sales taxes in e-commerce. (I wish I could have been in the room to watch… it’s the last day of Movember so his cookie duster was in full effect as he spoke to the Committee).

In all seriousness, this is an issue that eBay feels very strongly about and if you are an online seller – regardless of size or retail venue – I highly recommend reading all of Tod’s testimony. Here’s an excerpt:

Among those that use the eBay platform are hundreds of thousands of U.S. Small businesses and entrepreneurs located in every state and congressional district across the country. The Internet and the eBay Marketplace provide these small businesses and entrepreneurs with relatively low-cost access to potential buyers far outside the limits of their traditional geographic footprint. eBay cares about the remote sales tax impacts on these small business retailers and entrepreneurs because they have always been at the heart of the eBay business model. Our success is tied directly to their success. The ability of small business retail to play a meaningful role in the 21st Century retail marketplace is critical for expanding retail competition, developing new businesses and better serving consumers…

… To conclude, eBay’s focus has been to protect small business retailers using the Internet from any new onerous tax burdens. eBay supports robust protections for small business retailers in any new remote sales tax regime, and will continue to urge members of the committee to do the same.

You can find out more about the Internet Sales Tax Law on eBay Main Street.

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

It’s Thanksgiving morning here and we’re hosting our families for the fourth year in a row. This year I’m smoking our turkey so I’ve been out on the back deck (in the San Francisco drizzle) since 5:30am but I’m not complaining… it’s Thanksgiving after all and it has become my favorite holiday of the year. It’s the one holiday that focuses solely on reflection and giving thanks.

I have a tendency to get a bit sentimental on the blog at times like this so I’ll keep it brief. I’m never more thankful at any point in my life, as I am right now. Particularly given all that is going on in the world right now. Family, colleagues, peers and friends – it doesn’t get much better than this. I wanted to share a card that I found in my bag last week from my eldest daughter, Addison (blogging with me above). It is a picture she drew of my computer, complete with eBay Ink on the screen, and yours truly peering back – moustache and all.

We’ve had a very full 2011 here on Ink and I’m excited about all that the coming year has in store. It’s comforting to know that no matter how hairy it gets, I’ll have this card with me at all times reminding me to give thanks for how good I’ve got it.

    Cheers all and Happy Thanksgiving!!

7 Traits of Successful Bartenders / Bloggers

Just browsed over to ebay.com and was pleasantly surprised to see a link to my contributed article on the eBay Stories Blog. The blog’s editor, Joe MacFarland, had asked me to provide a contributed article for the Holiday week and I decided to share my “7 Traits of Successful Bartenders” presentation with readers…

    eBay Ink: Blogging is Bartending
    View more presentations from eBay

There are 200 or so people involved in the creation of any given pint of beer – from the farmers to the water company to the distributors, etc. – but the only human interaction you have with that pint when you go into a pub is the bartender who serves it to you. You create a relationship with that bartender (and, while I’m on the analogy, the English pub or neighborhood bar is essentially your first social network right? The place where workers, farmers, butchers, etc. all came together to share stories over a pint).

Read the full post over on the eBay Stories blog.

    Cheers!

Use RedLaser data to gauge holiday shopping trends

eBay Mobile‘s barcode scanning technology, RedLaser, not only provides the ability to determine the best deals both online and locally, it also acts as a barometer for trends in shopping. This data can help stumped shoppers decide what to get for hard-to-buy friends and family members and can show eBay sellers what’s going to sell well this Holiday season.

Leveraging the RedLaser technology to predict top trending hot holiday gifts based on shoppers’ scans mobile buying history, eBay is using those mobile customer insights to deliver deals on popular items.

Top scans using RedLaser (Nov. 1 – Nov. 16)
    · Apple iPad Wi-Fi + 3G
    · Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II
    · Apple iPhone 4
    · Sony PlayStation 3
    · Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)
    · Harry Potter & Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Blu-ray and DVD)
    · Cars 2 (Blu-ray and DVD)
    · LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet
    · Transformers Dark of the Moon Action Figure Ultimate Optimus Prime
    · Keurig Special Edition Brewing System

The top five toys purchased on eBay from a mobile device or tablet (Nov. 1 – Nov. 14)
    · Lego: The most popular Lego themes purchased via mobile in this time period were Lego Star Wars, Lego Harry Potter, and Lego Castle
    · Webkinz: The most popular Webkinz purchased at the beginning of the holiday season was the Webkinz Reindeer
    · Radio Controlled Cars: The most popular brand of RC Car purchased was Traxxas, followed by RC Cars from HPI Racing
    · Diecast Cars: Hot Wheels was the most popular brand of diecast car purchased via eBay on a mobile device. Hot Wheels were followed by Action Cars diecast cars and Ertl diecast cars
    · Cuddlee Pets Plush Pillows

eBay predicts this holiday to be the biggest mobile shopping season to date and Black Friday the largest barcode scanning day of the year. I’ll be sure to share more data with folks as I get my hands on it. Happy shopping/selling all!

    Cheers,
    RBH

Commerce coming to a couch near you with the launch of “Watch with eBay” #ebaynews

eBay and PayPal is predicting a dramatic shift in US consumer behavior this Holiday season, with the first spike in shopping actually occurring after Thanksgiving dinner in the first heavy wave of “Couch Commerce.” The idea being that people will head to their couches with smartphones and tablets and start shopping from the comfort of their homes, rather than brave the more traditional, daunting rush of Black Friday shopping. Why? Because finding a deal online – when you want it – has never been easier. To that end, on Thanksgiving Day, eBay will serve up great deals for stay-at-home shoppers, including a prime time post-dinner “Deal Blast” at 7:00PM ET with subsequent Daily Deals appearing throughout the Holiday shopping season.

    Watch with eBay
Also this week, a “Watch with eBay” tab is being added to the eBay iPad app that enables users to shop for items on the marketplace related to what they are watching. Users simply tap “Watch with eBay” and type in their zip code, cable provider, channel and the program they are currently watching; using show and event-specific key word searches, the app surfaces relevant merchandise from more than 200 million listings available on the eBay marketplace. So when I’m watching the Miami Dolphins beat the Dallas Cowboys for their fourth win in a row on Thursday afternoon, I’ll be able to buy a new Dolphins hat while enjoying it.

You can read more about it in the Watch with eBay press release and also on TechCrunch.

    Cheers!
