PayPal predicts $4.7B in Digital Goods TPV in 2011; a $1B increase from last year #innovate2011
I’m currently sitting in the X.commerce Innovate 2011 Day 2 keynote but wanted to share some PayPal news coming out of the conference this morning. To start with, PayPal has updated its Total Payment Volume (TPV) prediction for its digital goods business to $4.7B in 2011 – up $1B from last year.
Gaming
According to a PayPal blog post back in August, 70% of gamers are PayPal customers. As a result, coming this holiday, PayPal will be offering a full, in-console payments experience on Xbox 360.HTML5 API’s
PayPal will also soon launch a set of HTML5 API’s that will enable developers to integrate in-context, in-app payments in HTML5.OK… back to the keynote but had to share. For more info, check out Ben Parr’s Mashable story.

PayPal Access and the Future of Shopping #Innovate2011
The sun is coming up on day 2 of X.commerce Innovate 2011 and I’m still taking in all that came out of day 1. Let’s focus on PayPal for a minute. The company has been unveiling the Future of Shopping over the past few weeks and yesterday they unveiled PayPal Access to developers. My good friend and colleague, Anuj Nayer, has a post to the PayPal Blog that breaks it down:
PayPal and X.commerce introduced an entirely new way for our more than 100 million active users to shop across the web. We’ve talked before about online shopping cart abandonment and are taking steps to remove some of the main points of friction. Unlike logging in to a retail website with a social networking account, PayPal Access provides everything consumers and merchants need to create an account and complete a transaction – including user verification, shipping information, and payment details. We’re positive both merchants and consumers will find this trusted commerce identity system to be beneficial and can’t wait to hear feedback on it.
Summarized by some as Facebook Connect for online payments, PayPal Access will let users log-in to participating retailers’ sites and pay with their PayPal username and password, rather than logging into multiple accounts each time; essentially taking your payment profile with you across the web.
Again, I’ll be here blogging and tweeting from the conference all day. To see the full conversation on Twitter, check out #Innovate2011. Also, be sure to check out the eBay Ink Flickr feed for all photos coming out of the conference.
Cheers!

eBay officially launches X.commerce, the world’s first ecommerce ecosystem #Innovate2011
I’m here in San Francisco at the first day of the X.commerce Innovate Conference 2011. There’s a lot of news coming out of here this morning so I’m going to break my blog posts out into a few parts. First and foremost, eBay Inc. today officially unveiled X.commerce, bringing together the technology assets and developer communities – 850,000 – of eBay, PayPal and Magento, to further expand on eBay Inc.’s mission of enabling commerce.
X.commerce gives developers and merchants a complete set of commerce capabilities in an open and accessible format — from shopping carts, to payment services, inventory management, marketplace integrations, tax management and beyond.
As part of the launch, technologies from Magento, RedLaser, Milo, and Zong are now also available on X.commerce, joining assets from eBay and PayPal. Highlights include:
· A new version of Magento Connect: The Magento Extension Marketplace. The new offering enables developers to generate additional revenue by easily creating and offering extensions to the rapidly growing customer base for Magento Go, the SaaS solution introduced in March of 2011. Magento Connect, already the largest vertical e-commerce application marketplace in the world, now enables merchants using any version of Magento to more easily customize and enhance every area of their storefront and back end, including integration with other web services. Analytics at eBay – A must-read interview with Tom Fastner on ODBMS.org
“How much more complexity can human developers and organizations deal with?” – Tom Fastner, eBay.
I just finished reading an interview with Tom Fastner, senior member of technical staff and architect at eBay on ODBMS Industry Watch with Prof. Roberto V. Zicari. From a technical perspective it’s a great read but more importantly it represents a growing trend I’m seeing more of from our company: the very welcome “under-the-hood” conversations with our thought leaders and key drivers of change about the technology infrastructure of our marketplace.
Q1. What are the main technical challenges for big data analytics at eBay?
Tom Fastner: The primary challenges are:
I/O bandwidth: limited due to configuration of the nodes.
Concurrency/workload management: Workload management tools usually manage the limited resource. For many years EDW systems bottle neck on the CPU; big systems are configured with ample CPU making I/O the bottleneck. Vendors are starting to put mechanisms in place to manage I/O, but it will take some time to get to the same level of sophistication.
Data movement (loads, initial loads, backup/restores): As new platforms are emerging you need to make data available on more systems challenging networks, movement tools and support to ensure scalable operations that maintain data consistency
