Shopping on eBay has become even simpler using the new eBay Shopping Cart. With the shopping cart, browsing items, comparing prices and taking all of your items through one checkout session has never been easier. The eBay Shopping Cart team has also created a comprehensive FAQ to educate shoppers, which you can find here. Also, in case you missed it, I sat down with the eBay Shopping Cart team to talk about the roll out. [via eBay Stories]

New eBay Shopping Cart now rolling down the aisles: How-to-video

Last week I sat down with eBay product manager, Chris Rice, and the rest of the new eBay Shopping Cart team to talk about the roll out of the new eBay Shopping Cart. Here are some question and answers from our convo and a demo video from Chris.

    Cheers,
    RBH

    Q. How long have we been working on eBay Shopping Cart?
    A. It’s been a little over 2 years that I’ve been working on this project. This included an internal Alpha test period, an external Beta test period and now the roll-out.

    Q. What kind of challenges did we face in implementing an eBay Shopping Cart?
    A. The challenge we faced in the past was eBay Shopping Cart would replace Buy It Now and also how does an eBay Shopping Cart get implemented when you’re talking about auction items.

    Q. What kind of challenges do we have in terms of educating a buyer on an eBay Shopping Cart because they may be ordering from multiple sellers so getting multiple shipping prices?
    A. We’re calling it “total cost transparency” meaning that buyers will see the total cost, including shipping, while adding items to the eBay Shopping Cart. Rather than discovering what the total shipping cost will be at the end of the transaction, buyers will know at every phase of the transaction experience.

    Q. What do sellers need to know in order to make the buying experience best for buyers using eBay Shopping Cart?
    A. We have a Seller Information page for eBay Shopping Cart that includes best-practices for sellers.

** Specifying shipping for key export countries is an even greater advantage in the eBay Shopping Cart. Buyers who have all the shipping information they need can check out faster. As always, offering a range of domestic shipping options also helps ensure faster checkout. Note: If you do not specify shipping, buyers will still be able to request their total from you via their cart.
** Specify Immediate Pay on all your Fixed Price listings to avoid unpaid items.
** Offer free shipping where it makes sense to do so.
** Specify combined shipping rules in My eBay and not just in the item description text to make checkout more efficient for buyers. Properly specified combined shipping discounts will be prominently displayed in the eBay Shopping Cart.
** To save on shipping fees, package multi-item orders for the same buyer together in one box wherever possible.

For more information on the eBay Shopping Cart, check out the post on the eBay Stories blog.

Web 2.0 Summit & Innovate 2011: A real inflection point for eBay

    DSC_0107
I was fortunate enough to attend the Web 2.0 Summit earlier this week in San Francisco. It is by far one of my favorite events that I get to attend each year, primarily because of the format that lends to open, back-and-forth dialogue between invited speakers and the hosts.

I’ve been at eBay for almost four years now and I have to admit that at times it has been a struggle to explain the technical depth and breadth of what the eBay Inc. portfolio has to offer to even the most sophisticated of tech audiences. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – it emphasizes the extent to which the brand is engrained in the social consciousness. However, I can’t deny that it has been a repetitive case of educating and shifting perception beyond the auction-format focus of the company’s beginnings. Of course, that auction/buy-it-now Marketplace is still a huge part of what the company stands for and works toward, but the partnerships and acquisitions of the past 12 months – culminating in the unveiling of the X.commerce platform and its ecommerce ecosystem at Innovate 2011 last week – made it evident that eBay not only belonged on the Web 2.0 Summit stage this week, but the audience understood why we were on the stage to begin with. It was great to witness first-hand.

Day 1 included a conversation between eBay CEO, John Donahoe, and John Battelle. Here you go:

Day 2 included a conversation with Matthew Mengerink, GM of X.Commerce, and Tim O’Reilly. Here you go:

The next three years of ecommerce – and commerce overall – are going to be very exciting indeed and I think we’ll be looking back at the second half of 2011 as a true inflection point. I just keep pinching myself that I’m the one who gets to cover it here on Ink for you. Amazing.

    Cheers,
    RBH

eBay Inc. Reports Strong Q3 2011 Results

    eBay earnings graphic

eBay Inc. today reported that revenue for Q3FY11, increased 32% to $3.0 billion, compared to the same period of 2010. We recorded Q3 net income on a GAAP basis of $490.5 million, or $0.37 per diluted share, and non-GAAP net income of $628.2 million, or $0.48 per diluted share. The year-over-year increase in third quarter GAAP and non-GAAP earnings per diluted share was driven primarily by solid top-line growth, partially offset by continued investment in key strategic initiatives and the impact of acquisitions.

    PayPal
PayPal ended the quarter with 103.0 million active registered accounts, a 14% increase year over year. PayPal revenue increased 32% year over year and PayPal’s net total payment volume (TPV) grew 31% to $29.3 billion in Q3 compared to the same period of last year. PayPal expects to generate more than $3.5 billion in mobile TPV in 2011, up from $750 million in 2010.

    eBay Marketplaces
The Marketplaces business also delivered a strong Q3. Gross merchandise volume (GMV) excluding vehicles increased by 16% year over year to $14.7 billion. U.S. GMV excluding vehicles increased 14% year over year. International GMV excluding vehicles increased 18% year over year to $9.1 billion, reflecting solid growth in Europe, continued improved performance in Korea, as well as a positive impact from foreign exchange.

eBay expects to generate almost $5 billion in mobile GMV in 2011, more than double mobile GMV in 2010.

The company’s GSI business, which was acquired in the second quarter of 2011, contributed $202.6 million in revenue for the third quarter.

    Business Outlook
    • Fourth quarter 2011 — eBay expects net revenues in the range of $3,200 – $3,350 million with GAAP earnings per diluted share in the range of $1.47 – $1.53 and non-GAAP earnings per diluted share in the range of $0.55 – $0.58. GAAP earnings per diluted share includes the gain from the sale of our remaining equity interest in Skype.

    • Full year 2011 — eBay now expects net revenues in the range of $11,500 – $11,600 million with GAAP earnings per diluted share in the range of $2.42 – $2.48 and non-GAAP earnings per diluted share in the range of $1.98 – $2.01. GAAP earnings per diluted share includes the gain from the sale of our remaining equity interest in Skype.

Soon to be released as the newest application within the RedLaser family, RedLaser 3.0 will combine the local functionality of Milo, the payment functionality of PayPal and the barcode scanning technology of RedLaser to bring it all onto your handheld device. I sat down with Rob Veres, Sr. Director of RedLaser, eBay Mobile, at the X.commerce Innovate conference last week to chat a little more about the app:

Milo: By integrating Milo into the application, offline inventory will now easily be accessed via mobile devices. Consumers will now be able to buy whatever they want, whenever they want, and either pick it up in store or have it delivered to their house.

PayPal: In app check-out for both online and offline inventory via PayPal will now be a part of the app.

Using RedLaser 3.0, users will also be able to create categorized shopping lists to streamline research. They’ll also be able to create and share items, websites, or personal contact information using the built in QR code generator.

The first partner to utilize the product offerings is Toys “R” Us and you can see the demo they showed at Innovate 2011 by watching the keynote below. Start watching from the 1:06:30 mark to see the demo.

I took a lot of pictures this week, and these are the 70 that made the cut. Enjoy, and I look forward to covering the event again next year.
