Today marks the three-year anniversary of the Apple App store (read more in our “Happy Birthday App Store” post). I am equally excited to share the news that earlier this month, the eBay Mobile app for iPhone hit its own major milestone, surpassing 20 million downloads. Available in eight languages and 190 countries, the app has helped set the example for numerous mobile applications from eBay Inc., including tailored experiences available on the iPad, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone 7 platforms.
I first wrote about eBay Mobile in June, 2008 – just 2.5 months after we launched eBay Ink – and since that time, I’ve been able to witness the evolution of the eBay Mobile app for iPhone firsthand as it has taken on an extremely rich feature set, catering to buyers as well as sellers. Since March of this year, more than half a million buyers per week have made purchases through the eBay Mobile app for iPhone.
Overall, mobile applications remain a key priority for eBay. In 2010, global eBay mobile sales more than tripled, generating nearly $2 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV) in the U.S. That figure is expected to rise to more than $4 billion in 2011.
So Happy Birthday again to the Apple App Store and congratulations to the eBay Mobile team for reaching such an amazing milestone.
Cheers!
