eBay Releases iPad 2 Sales Data

    ebay-ipadinfographic-v0.3-red

As illustrated in the infographic, iPad 2 activity on the eBay marketplace is booming. Interestingly, some of the strongest demand is coming from outside the U.S. in countries like Russia, Canada, Hong Kong and Japan – many of which Apple either just began selling the iPad 2 in on Friday or plans to in April.

A few highlights depicted in the infographic:

    - 65% of total iPad 2’s sold on eBay went to domestic buyers vs only 35% of sales of iPad 1 in 2010 (within similar two-week date range).
    - Pad 2 models in most demand are the 16GB and 64GB + 3G, with 30% and 23% of sales respectively.
    - Sales of iPads on eBay jumped from 5,300 in the first two weeks after iPad 1 was announced, to nearly 12,000 in the first two weeks after iPad 2.
    - The two biggest export locations are Russia and Canada, followed by Hong Kong, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

    Milo Logo

Bringing local commerce one step closer to shoppers, eBay announced today that it will be offering consumers local inventory powered by Milo. Shoppers will now be able to use the new local shopping tab to check a product’s local, or in-store availability. Additionally, product pages for MP3 players and GPS devices now include a local shopping tab allowing shoppers to find they product they want, whether its online or offline at a local retailer.

    From the press release:

“In the new retail environment, eBay is uniquely positioned to help retailers, large and small, compete globally in new ways and to help consumers shop for whatever they want – anytime, anywhere.,” said Dane Glasgow, vice president, global product management, eBay. “Our customers tell us they want eBay to make it even easier and more convenient to find great deals, whether they’re shopping online or around the corner. We are enabling a new kind of commerce, connecting eBay shoppers to local merchants.”

By bringing local inventory into the core search experience on eBay.com, shoppers who opt-in through the Garden will now see local shopping results on a new tab alongside the traditional search results on eBay.com

    eBay Launches The Opportunity Project

Following along here in Europe before I head back to HQ, I am quite excited to write about this one. Earlier today, eBay announced the launch of The Opportunity Project – a global social innovation initiative aimed at encouraging and helping provide economic opportunity in vulnerable, impoverished communities. Powered by eBay Foundation, The Opportunity Project is kicking off with a global competition that will see five innovative market-based solutions selected to share in an initial investment of $250,000.

Recipients will be selected through a global competition in collaboration with Ashoka’s Changemakers, one of the world’s most robust spaces for launching, discussing, and funding ideas to solve the world’s most pressing social problems.

The competition, Powering Economic Opportunity: Create a World that Works, will recognize social entrepreneurs who are creating economic opportunity through increased access to restricted job markets, disruptive innovations in job creation or skills building, connections between local entrepreneurs and global markets, or systems to promote awareness of job opportunities.

Entries to the competition will be accepted until 5PM EDT on June 15, 2011. Through Ashoka’s Changemakers website, anyone who registers with the site will be able to comment on applications and vote on the best. Ten finalists will be determined by online voting. An expert panel of judges selected by The Opportunity Project and Ashoka’s Changemakers will then evaluate the ten finalists, and select five winners. Each winner will receive a cash prize of US $50,000. Winners will be announced September 14, 2011.

It should be pointed out that this competition is just the beginning of what I think promises to be a wonderful endeavor. It also builds on the great work of the eBay Foundation to date. Since inception, eBay Foundation has contributed over $21 million to nonprofits around the world. eBay Foundation will continue to support local communities and the charitable interests of our employees through the GIVE Team grant program.

“The Opportunity Project is a natural extension for eBay and eBay Foundation,” said Lauren Moore, President, eBay Foundation. “By supporting and recognizing organizations that are implementing disruptive social innovations, we have the ability to help create economic opportunities and generate employment for people who otherwise face barriers to participating fully in the global economy.”

I’d love to sit down with Lauren when I get back from traveling to learn more about this project. For now, go check out the website – http://www.theopportunityproject.org/. I think it looks rather compelling both in content and design.

    Cheers,
    RBH

UPDATED: eBay has acquired GSI Commerce

    Updated 6/20/11
eBay Inc. has completed its previously announced acquisition of GSI Commerce, Inc. and it is my great pleasure to be one of the first people to officially and publicly welcome them on board.

The stockholders of GSI approved the adoption of the merger agreement with eBay at the special meeting of stockholders held this past Friday and the merger became effective later that day.

eBay acquired all of the outstanding shares of GSI’s stock for $29.25 per share in cash, or total consideration of approximately $2.4 billion. GSI Commerce will operate as a separate business unit led by Chris Saridakis as its newly appointed president who will report directly to eBay CEO and President, John Donahoe.

Be sure to add the GSI Commerce blog to your blog roll (if you haven’t done so already) and follow along on Twitter @GSICommerce.

eBay Sales Data Predicts Winner for College Basketball’s Big Event and Reveals Fan Favorites

Hi everyone, Amanda Miller here from eBay Consumer Comms with today’s guest post.

eBay sees three times more items related to NCAA basketball listed in March than in the remaining 11 months of the year. This March, we crunched those numbers to uncover what inspires – and opens the wallets – of college basketball fans.

The results, presented in today’s “Top Shopped” sports edition report, show that the road to the NCAA championship is paved not only with victories and upsets, but also Air Jordans, foam fingers, Mike Krzyzewski gear and big spending in the Big East.

The sixteen teams that remain on that road to the Big Dance bring with them nearly one million dollars worth of related items sold on eBay in just the first three months of 2011.

    eBay_16 Rankings_FINAL

In addition to our earlier prediction that Ohio State University, with nearly $200,000 worth of team-related merchandise sold on eBay, will take the championship (check out our bracket based on merchandise sales), today’s Top Shopped report uncovered the fact that there have been 67,277 pairs of Air Jordans sold on eBay so far in 2011 and that each of the two points by which Butler lost last year’s title turned out to be worth $63,025.5 in Butler-related items sold on eBay.

Team rankings follow. Click here for more stats or read up on how the experts approach March Madness as told to The Inside Source.

The Remaining 16, by the eBay Numbers:

    1. Ohio State – $170,272
    2. Florida – $162,584
    3. Duke – $127,492
    4. Kentucky – $111,722
    5. Kansas – $106,497
    6. Wisconsin – $42,657
    7. UNC – $35,524
    8. Florida State – $34,066
    9. BYU – $19,011
    10. Arizona – $14,740
    11. San Diego State – $8,656
    12. Connecticut – $3,804
    13. Marquette – $1,478
    14. VCU – $1,478
    15. Butler – $1,441
    16. Richmond – $496

eBay’s Raji Arasu Named a “Woman of Influence” for 2011

Raji Arasu, Vice President of Technology for eBay, has been named to the prestigious Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal 2011 Women of Influence list. Nominated by her peers, and recognized by the publication’s Women of Influence committee, Raji will receive the award at a formal awards’ dinner on April 14. She will also be included in a special publication honoring notable women in Silicon Valley.

I was lucky enough to sit down with the 10-year eBay veteran to chat about her time at eBay, the award itself and the challenges and opportunities she sees facing women in technology today.

Backstage with Chromeo at RedLaser’s SXSW Kick-off party

I’ve been in Austin for 6 days now meeting with partners, colleagues, peers, mentors, customers and all-around great people. The information overload is high to be sure. I’ve attended press conferences, parties, meetings, presentations and demos every day since I got here and I’m in the process of compiling everything I’ve learned into some blog posts to share with you all.

First up, however, I wanted to share some images and cool insights into one of my favorite bands at the moment – Chromeo. They headlined the RedLaser party on Sunday night at SXSW and before they took the stage, the eBay Mobile team and I joined the band backstage to talk music, eBay and feedback scores.

It turns out that they’re big fans of eBay too. Patrick Gemayel (aka P-Thugg) is the man behind their eBay account and according to him he has a feedback score of 247 at 100% positive. What’s even more impressive is that he revealed to us that every piece of equipment in their recording studio was purchased on eBay. Essentially, two of my favorite albums were recorded – thanks in some small part – to my employer. Pretty neat.

They took the stage in style and rocked the night away for all in attendance. I managed to get a front row spot to snap this pic during their opening song…

I’m in the process of uploading lots of other images from the night and will share on flickr shortly.

    Cheers!
