Very sorry to hear about Rajiv Dutta’s passing. Such sad news to have to write about.

I was very sorry to hear the news of Rajiv Dutta’s passing earlier today. The following email was sent to all eBay Inc. employees from CEO John Donahoe.

To all employees,

I feel deeply saddened over the passing of Rajiv Dutta today. I’m sure everyone who knew Rajiv is feeling the same emotion. His passing is such a loss. Rajiv was a much loved and respected eBay executive. He left behind many friends when he retired in 2008 after an extraordinary 10-year career with our company. Rajiv served many roles — CFO of our company, and head of Skype, PayPal and eBay — and was one of our company’s most talented and inspirational leaders. He was a friend and mentor to many, someone who exemplified eBay’s values through his personal touch, integrity and tireless passion for our company and community. His legacy is felt throughout eBay and PayPal. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with Rajiv’s family during this difficult time.

I can’t claim to have known Rajiv very well but the brief dealings I did have with him during my early days with the company were all positive. He seemed like a true leader and an all around wonderful person. He will be missed.

eBay Revamps Display Advertising with New Deal
Looking to jump-start its display ad business, eBay has made a deal with online advertising services specialist Triad Retail Media. The Tampa based company will aid eBay in developing new types of display ads that will showcase items for sale both on and off eBay’s marketplace, a move aimed at boosting marketing revenue. eBay Giving Works Raises $54.8 Million in 2010 for Nonprofits
Through the generous donations of eBay buyers and sellers, eBay Giving Works raised $54.8 million in donations for U.S. and U.K. nonprofit organizations in 2010. Every 24 seconds a donation was made through the almost 9 million items listed on sale, of which either a portion or the whole purchase of the sale price was donated to charity. [via eBayInk]

eBay Buyers & Sellers gave $54.8 Million to nonprofits in 2010 through @eBayGiving

In a world where things rarely seem to shock or surprise anymore, the capacity to give never ceases to amaze me. A record $54.8 million was donated to U.S. and U.K. nonprofit organizations by eBay buyers and sellers in 2010. A donation was made every 24 seconds through eBay Giving Works, raising more than $91 every minute for nonprofits. Nearly 9 million items were listed for sale in 2010 – with all or a portion of the sale price donated to a nonprofit – more than double the items listed in 2009.

“Through Giving Works, eBay continues to drive innovation in online philanthropy, enabling millions of people to easily donate to organizations they care about and support people and communities in need,” said eBay Inc. President and CEO John Donahoe, who was recently appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the White House Council for Community Solutions. (More …)

eBay has selected Triad Retail Media to deliver customized on-site display advertising

eBay has selected Triad Retail Media to sell and manage all on-site display advertising for eBay.com and eBay Motors. Under the agreement, Triad will provide end-to-end display ad management to deliver customized, relevant ads on eBay. The idea is that they will provide a better showcase for eBay listings and customer experience for buyers and sellers on the site.

eBay and Triad will collaborate on an innovative approach to display ads that takes customers “beyond the banner” and engages them with new brand experiences that are complementary to the eBay experience:

• Banner advertising will be more customized, with category-specific content embedded directly into the ad so customers can view content without clicking off the site.

• eBay and Triad will also integrate new experiences from popular brands and cross-category “content centers” – sponsored landing pages on eBay that will highlight seasonally relevant and interactive content, and inspire new purchases through integrated merchandising with eBay listings.

Do you like pizza and live in Israel? Then Dominos and PayPal have something just for you!

Had to share this one with folks… Domino’s Pizza Israel is collaborating with PayPal to enable customers ordering pizza online to pay for the purchase in a secure way with PayPal, without the need to disclose their credit card details.

From Globes [online], Israel’s business news:

The collaboration between Domino’s Pizza and PayPal in Israel is the first venture of its kind in the world, and the pizza chain will likely expand the model to its European branches. The objective of the collaboration is to enable Domino’s Pizza’s hundreds of thousands of Israeli customers to pay for their online purchases quickly and securely on Dominos’ Pizza Israel’s website, and to benefit from PayPal’s sales promotions and discounts.

Domino’s Pizza Israel’s website is the largest fast food websites in Israel, handling thousands of orders a day. Online sales account for 40% of all sales, making the Israeli site among the top Domino’s Pizza websites in the world in that area, including in the US.

As an added incentive, during the introduction period, those paying with PayPal will receive a 6% discount.

In related news, GrubHub launched PayPal as a payment option in the US in August 2010. Mike Evans, GrubHub co-founder and COO talks on San Francisco affiliate KNTV-NBC Ch. 11 about the PayPal integration, and how it’s making ordering food online that much easier for consumers.

PayPal Propels eBay Earnings Ahead of the Curve
Substantial consumer spending this holiday season and strong PayPal business has pushed eBay’s fourth-quarter results ahead of Wall Street’s expectations. The online shopping comany announced a 5 percent increase for its fourth quarter revenue, for a total of $2.5 billion and an earnings of 52 cents per share. [via Bloomberg]
