eBay & GM: The First Month

    eBay Motors
eBay and GM issued a joint press release today, announcing that they’re extending the ‘Click & Buy’ promotion through the end of September.

“We are very pleased with the progress of the initial promotion and its ability to raise awareness and consideration for our outstanding new vehicle inventory,” said Mark LaNeve, GM vice president of U.S. sales. “We’re getting positive dealer feedback and increased shopper consideration for GM vehicles in California. So, we decided to extend the program and continue to provide our customers with online access to dealer inventories through eBay Motors. We have a lot of great new Chevy, Buick, GMC and Pontiac vehicles and buyers can take advantage of this opportunity from the comfort of their home, buy at a published price, or make an offer to the dealer.”

In the first month of the promotion, shoppers visited dealers’ virtual showroom sites more than 1 million times and logged more than 1.4 million searches of GM inventory. In addition, nearly 4,000 new car buyers entered into negotiations online, over the phone and in person as a result of this promotion. At the conclusion of the California promotion, GM and eBay Motors will evaluate extending the program nationally, based on consumer demand and dealer feedback.

The full release can be read HERE.

    Cheers,

I’m curious as to who is footing the enormous marketing and advertising budget this is requiring.

Especially given the fact that eBay has eschewed traditional marketing for the rest of the marketplace in favor of couponing and cash back programs. A huge mistake and one that has angered many sellers who have witnessed catastrophic traffic declines.

OK so the statistics are 1,000,000 (million) visits to dealers virtual sites, and 1,400,000 searches of GM inventory and you have NEARLY 4000 new buyers entering into negotiations ( which means no deal yet) or 1 in every 350 visitations enter into negotiation, AND YOU CALL THIS A SUCCESS. Not to mention the deplorable feedback. Sorry but I look at the feedback as the foundation of the program, and not a measly 1 in 350 visits that enter into a possible contract. The program failed miserably IMO.

Aslo make note I gave GM the benefit by calculating this on searches totaling 1.4 million. Calculated under visitation it comes to a measly 1 in 250 visits enter into negotiation (which also means no deal yet)

@ JO

I truly do not understand the double standard ebay has been practicing these last two years.

If I had the horrible feedback GM has on eBay I would be suspended.

It’s not juts the bad FB, but at least 3 of the feedbacks on GM’s account are from one ZERO feedback buyer that purchase three cars in a few days along with about $70,000 in total eBay purchases and left feedback for each car just a few minutes after each purchase.

So while the bad FB is really bad thus far, some of the positive feedback is a violation of eBay Trust & Safety policy against manipulating feedback.

With hundreds of auto dealers linked to the one account, it could have been anyone manipulating the FB system this way. But no matter the source of the manipulation, it is deplorable.

The buyer who posted the bait and switch feedback for yourgmdealer posted a follow-up. Appears eBay and GM tried getting involved. Appears they are getting desperate to make this work…..Follow-up comment:…. *

I think it would have been better if GM/Ebay did some kind of coupon thing instead of what they did. Take an Ebay coupon to any participating dealer and get a percentage off or get the best deal on a new car. What they’re doing now…I can’t see how it can work. I also think both GM and Ebay feel they have more clout then they really do right now. Just my humble opinion.
