eBay doesn't "listen" to the Voices anyhow. It's a waste of time & resources. As Richard said, the internet, Twitter, Facebook, the eBay community boards etc., is the voice of the community.

Nice blog post Richard, keep up the great work.

No worries... sorry for the delay this weekend.

It takes a lot to get blocked from commenting on this blog IMO. Essentially, my loose rule of thumb is: if I can read the comment aloud to my 3-year old daughter then it can go up on the blog. This basically limits comments in their profanity and verbal abuse. Besides that, I'll pretty much let it go. No point doing the blog otherwise.

Cheers,
RBH

" the advent of so many social media outlets now – from blogs, to Twitter feeds, to Facebook,"

You have to be kidding me? Comparing Voices to sending fake plants, playing mob wars, having a virtual pizza and twittering about walking your dog or crossing the street? - All of which will go down in history as some of the biggest wastes of time on the net (in my opinion).

Voices was the program set up by Ebay's visionary founders to keep this company on track.

There is no doubt those working in the program are committed to it, even if they have to live within some very tight management ring Ebay seems to have developed.

It is my belief that in the end VOICES will save Ebay from itself. I will certainly do my best to make sure that happens.

In no way will other social media outlets even come close to offering anything Ebay truly needs to stay on course.

As a matter of fact I will bet that within 3 years many of those Voices members "let go" will either be back or ambassadors of the reinvigorated Ebay that found its path back to the greatness it once had.

O.C.D. Collectibles comment......

Where else can one get timely news that is impartial and inclusive? When it comes from the insiders, who have partaken in past Ebay groups it will rarely be shared inside the Ebay community forums. It just wouldn’t be allowed.....Is absolutely correct.

The title here should explain it all. "keeping one foot in the present and one in the future" The old school members were booted out the door. Also if the members of this program have to sign a non disclosure agreement of any kind that pretty much limits them from discussing topics related to what they signed the agreement on in the first place. You cannot openly talk about these topics in such a forum after signing such an agreement.

Bashing Ina Steiner to defend eBay's choices? Give me a break. Auctionbytes is a BLOG just as ebayink is. It is not a newspaper. The Steiners are certainly entitled to inject their educated opinions, as far as I am concerned. Richard gives HIS opinion but Ina and David are held to a higher standard?

There is so much censorship in the ebay community communications. Anything that does comes out formally, from the administration, is either whitewashed, watered down, or late.

Where else can one get timely news that is impartial and inclusive? When it comes from the insiders, who have partaken in past Ebay groups it will rarely be shared inside the Ebay community forums. It just wouldn't be allowed.

We readers and members take what we can get, and glean the facts ourselves, just like we do here. People are not morons. We know the truth when we read it.

As far as Ebay choosing community members who represent their actual community?? of buyers and sellers?? I don't believe it for one minute. Cherry picking their data has always been their way. It works best for them when they have to support their quarterly financial reports. This is something they will need after the last one was submitted.

Headlines sell. Negative headlines attract attention. Integrity in reporting is rare these days. A grain of truth expands to speculation and attention getting catch phrases and everyone rushes to read what it's about.

Many people do not have the time or inclination to take advantage of all the "social media outlets". The internet is fickle and many of those "social media outlets" will soon be passe and people will jump onto the next fad train...chug, chug, toot, toot, off we go.

The person to person contact of people who strive hard to provide honest input based on their experiences ensure there is a human communication at eBay between corporate and user. That is a timeless element that doesn't fly by with the whims of electronic changes.

Fortunately at eBay there is still room for programs such as Voices to keep a human face on an electronic company and that is to their credit.
