Ebay is full of it! They claim to have banned the sale of ivory but have done nothing to control those who continue to list ivory items either under "bone, ox bone, etc.," or do not describe the material at all. Do a brief search of antiques>asian>japan>netsuke and you will find numerous listings of ivory. I have countless times reported this to eBay and they do NOTHING, allowing the items to see through. Because of this policy not to uphold their ban I will be reporting eBay to the EPA until something is done.

Unfortunately if it were that simple to protect endangered scecies by simply banning the sale of their products, the we would not be losing our precious wildlife all over the world. Rhinos, tigers, leopards, elephants, etc. are all endangered depite such bans. My trip to Africa more than 20 years ago taught me that with proper wildlife management and honest government officials, you do not have to go to such tactics, and that poaching is a product of corruption more than anything else. In fact, when Zimbabwe was governed correctly they had more ivory to sell legally that you cannot imagine. To stop the degragation of our wildlife you need to tackle the governance side of widelife management rather than just trying to stop the demand side. As long as you have corrupt officials, a ban of sale will only make them richer.

It still amazes me that Ebays slant is clearly just a publicity stunt that happened exactly a day before IFAW released a new report (i use the word report loosely as many of the items were legit pre ban examples,or faux ivory made from resin).
If Ebay genuinely cared about this as much as the above blog claims, then they would ban ivory out right, that includes pianos, inlays on tables, and anything else that is ivory,,banning 1 sector of antiques dealers selling perfectly legal antiques made from ivory, whilst allowing another sector of antiques dealers to continue as before is not only unfair,it is plain ridiculous,,and just highlights the fact that this is just a publicity stunt.

If ebay cared about elephants then they would fund projects that protect the species, they would ban the sale of ALL ivory including pianos and inlays and finally they would take a similar stance on products produced from other species such as monkeys, cats , dogs and any other species which lost a life to produce a product.

Im still heavily annoyed at this ridiculous move.

Banning the sale of legal antiques will not save the elephants! why wont you all admit it.

I THINK THE MEASURES THAT EBAY WERE TAKING ALREADY WERE GOOD ENOUGH,A STATEMENT OF THEIR DISGUST AT IVORY POACHING AND RIGHTLY SO.HOW EVER THE FACT REMAINS THAT THERE IS ANTIQUE IVORY AND SCRIMSHAW ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC AND COLLECTORS WHOME IF WERE CHEATED WITH NEW IVORY WOULD REPORT THIS TO EBAY TO BE DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY.
WHAT COMES NEXT EBAY A BAN ON WOODEN ITEMS TO SAVE THE RAIN FORESTS? IF YOU ARE TO BE SEEN AS POLITICALLY CORRECT OR FEEL GUILTY ON THE SUBJECT WHY NOT CONTRIBUTE 10% OF YOUR PROFITS TO THE PROTECTION OF THESE ANIMALS/MAMMALS.....REMEMBER WHERE YOU CAME FROM EBAY!

Is there somewhere that the ebay ivory dealers will be selling their wares when the ivory ban begins in January? I am particularly interested in ivory piano keys. If you deal regularly in this type of preban ivory, please contact me at bone@peoplepc.com. Spammers need not apply.
Thanks, Kathy

Common sense is what makes humans different to animals,,its one of the main reasons we have evolved to where we are today.

You can be an elephant lover, without having to be a tree hugger, common sense tells us all that banning the sales of all ivory is nothing more than giving in to the large conservationist groups who lack common sense and allow emotions to over run latteral thinking.

This may well be a victory for the large conservationist groups, and a victory for the devoted tree huggers,,and in a way a small victory for any elephants that died many many years ago in a time when killing elephants for sport was fun,,and the ivory was a biproduct of that sport,,,,,,, in the real world however its not a victory for the death of elephants in the here and now,as antique items made from ivory have no cause for concern to elephant populations today,,however those with common sense in the large conservationist groups would never dare to say so,after all elephants are the main breadwinner for them all,and without this propoganda driven victory it wouldnt look like they were actually doing anything, because they find it easier to target ebay than target the real issues in Africa.

Mark my words, and remember them,,in another couple of years the problem will still be there, only this time there will be a new victim to blame,,and the reason (you may well be wondering) is simply down to the alledged conservationists lacking common sense and attacking the real problem of poaching in Africa head on.

It is well known by anyone who takes the time to research the topic that virtually all the illegal ivory in the world is destined for China and Japan where ivory carving is normal, these modern ivories are manufactured in traditional ways for private asian collectors,Japan also has a HUGE internal marketplace for ivory where most of the population have a penchant for traditional made ivory seals carrying there own name,,most of the population there have one,,this would be an impossible task to create these seals were it not for the ivory being imported,,both countries turn a blind eye to it,,although this news is saddening, and shocking,,the large conservationist groups already know about this problem,,and im quite sure know this is the main cause of modern day poaching,,,and at the same time realise that this niche area goes on above board in asia,,these items that are made there are never destined for western markets,,so why penalise western collectors and dealers of antiques in a propoganda driven move.

Common sense tells you that by stopping the poaching at the heart of the problem,,you stop the problem,,you wont stop the problem by stopping one marketplace in the world sell legitimate antiques,,whilst another area you cant touch goes on regardless.

Thank you so much eBay for making this important decision. Elephants poached for ivory are a worldwide issue because of the demand. You're taking away a massive venue for it to be sold.

Thank you for your compassion.

Hi Lisa,

Ebay have not banned it being sold internationally,,you have misinterpreted there message,,they are baning it being sold altogether,,it has nothing to do with selling it internationally, last year they decided to stop international sales as many people were uneducated in there business dealings and did not understand it could not be shipped without certificates,,so in order to stop this they decided to ban international sales of ivory, and to good effect,i have never shipped ivory out of my designated areas,,there has never been any point or desire to send it to places such as america or australia,,and i have been very happy and very suppourtive of ebays policy changes in the past regarding ivory,,i was even happy when it meant having to get it independently certified as pre 1947 as genuine sellers would have no problem in doing so,,,,, however IFAW in particular and some others were still not happy,,and constantly move the goalposts,,Ebay are a business and have made a decision that they believe is right for them, and thats fine,,,,
But you still are missing the point,,if IFAW believe that people buy ivory antiques just because they are ivory, they are wrong,,the collectors of ivory netsuke for example collect all netsuke,,wood, antler, bone and ivory,,they dont collect it just because its ivory, they collect the item,,they collect its heritage and history,,its not the material,,its the item and its age,, and if IFAW genuinely believe they will stop antiques made from ivory being collected then they are stark raving mad,,its been collected for thousands and thousands of years,,,a trinket is a cheaply made item that someone would stick on a shelf to gather dust,,and likening a 19th century fine work of art carved by hand to a trinket just shows that the people running the charity are bafoons,,,, some of the finest works of art on our planet are carved from ivory,,some of the oldest examples of art going back thousands of years are carved from ivory,, currently as i see it the only battle the "conservationists" are winning is alienating the genuine collectors and dealers of antiques, and in my mind thats a very dangerous path to take as in effect it those collectors who are the eyes and ears on the ground who are likely to encounter illegal examples of modern ivory.

(this is my last post, there isnt much i have not already covered)
