eBay Receives 2007 National Medal of Technology and Innovation
eBay is one of two companies (the other being Skunk Works, a division of Lockheed Martin) receiving the nation’s highest honor for technological and scientific achievement. US Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez joined President George W. Bush last week to announce the 2007 laureates for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
In a statement made by the US Department of Commerce, eBay received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for pioneering the technology that encouraged and supported online trade, enabling global entrepreneurship and the growth of the Internet worldwide.
“America leads the world in technological innovation because of men, women and cutting-edge coporations like those we honor this year,” Gutierrez said. “Their contributions to our society have impacted all of our lives and they serve as both an inspiration and as role models for future generations of American innovators.”
President Bush will be presenting the medal to the recipients, eBay included, at the White House on September 29, 2008.
About The National Medal of Technology and Innovation
The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was created by Congress in 1980 and has been presented by the President of the United States since 1985. A distinguished, independent committee appointed by the Secretary of Commerce evaluates the merits of all candidates nominated through an open, competitive solicitation process. Committee recommendations are forwarded to the Secretary who makes recommendations to the President for a final decision.
The Medal program is administered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. For more information: http://www.uspto.gov/nmti/
I plan on providing additional coverage following the White House event at the end of this month.
Cheers,
RBH

“Two articles of good press in two days!
That’s awesome.”
What would really be awesome to the max would be to show sellers some respect ;-)

They’ve changed mine more in the past 9 months than all 10 previous years…..and not for the better.

This could not have any political connections whatsoever could it? Lets see Skunk Works part of Lockheed Martin defense department heavy duty contractor and eBay former head Meg Whitman riding shotgun for John McCain. No nothing there except innovation….

Thank you for writing eBay in regards your recently removed items.
The reason your items were taken away was for your feedback policy line
in the listing. It is okay to state that you will give the feedback
once the buyer has left it for you, but the wink with any questions,
implies that the type of feedback left could be “bought”. Feedback is
central to the eBay experience. It’s a record of a member’s past
behavior. Frequently, it’s what members use to decide whether to trade
with someone or not.
Buying, selling, or trading Feedback weakens the eBay marketplace. Just
as offline reputations must be earned, eBay members need to earn their
Feedback Scores.
It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing eBay.
Sincerely,
Neci

It sure took a long time for eBay to get the award–the last true innovation here occurred well before Y2K.
How about eBay gunning for some honest Software Quality Assurance or Customer Service metrics awards, and I mean not a “worst of” recognition? Something they get from an organization they don’t pay dues to first…
