Skype’s Scott Durchslag Saying All the Right Things

Newly appointed COO, Scott Durchslag sat down with Howard Wolinsky for the Skype Blog to discuss his new role, what brought him to the company and what Skype users can expect in the near future.

We will succeed or fail based on the decisions that we make now in terms of the culture that we want to build, the way the we remain true to the Skype brand while becoming great marketers, and how we create a really agile, innovative organization that can stay at this leading edge of where consumer technology really touches peoples lives. We need to build processes to scale and be able to respond to this massive number of consumers and business users. Those are the kinds of things that will kind of make or break the next level of success. It is both ours to win and ours to lose if we let ourselves get distracted.

At first glance, he’s saying all the right things and I’d like to spend some time bending his ear for Ink readers at some point in the near future.

Scott isn’t the only one with a new job at Skype. Skype’s main blog, once edited by the recently departed Villu Arak, has been picked up by Peter Parkes. Peter has been blogging to Skype UK readers since February of 2007 so he’s no stranger to his audience, but I wanted to congratulate him on the move nonetheless and wish the very best of luck to Villu.

    Cheers,
    RBH

I am surprised that you said Peter is no stranger to his audience. To me, he seems out of touch. I was rather shocked when Peter wrote “Laugh and the World Laughs With You” and then asked Skype users to share their giggles. When I first saw the post I imagined what kind of comments Skype would receive and I checked today — of the 3 comments, nothing comes close to anyone giggling with Skype although perhaps some folks were laughing AT Skype.

I would be very interested in knowing what role Skype sees for themselves in relation to eBay 2008 and beyond. According to eBay Powerseller representatives, when eBay clarifies the new “Links Policy”, they will be making it against the policy to include Skype information because (in their words) Skype “leads to off-eBay transactions.”

I remember when,

Skype was bought by eBay and we could have free Skype links in our listings so potential buyers could call us day or night with their questions.

I think it took eBay a while to figure out why the vast majority of sellers did not leap on that bandwagon.

I did subscribe to Skype for a while, (not to use on eBay) even bought a special phone so I would not be tethered to the cpu. Reception was awful, and every call would end with the transmission sounding more and more stretched and twangy until it cut off.

We have had Vonage for three years, it is great and no hidden extra charges.

Although I used add/remove programs to uninstall Skype there are still remnants somewhere as it tries to log on every time I boot. PITA
